| Allergies to Specialized Dog Food My Yorkie is eight years old. Because he previously had a large bladder stone three years ago and resulting surgery for removal, he has been prescribed food that discourages calcium oxalate bladder stones. He ate Hills UD (urinary diet) in the can without any problems; however, because last year he developed another stone that was growing, the vet changed him to Royal Canin SO dried food in an attempt to slow the growth. Since GE started that food, he has had seven recurring staff infections in his ear, and a difficult hot spot that has been hard to heal. I have read that recurring staff infections of the ear can be caused by food allergy (or allergy in general). Has anyone else experienced antibiotic resistant recurring staff infections of the ear in their Yorkie? Any food allergies to Canin SO urinary diet? |

There have been vet articles out there about some dogs who have the canine version of MRSA - so with this many infections, you kind of have to wonder a bit. If you and your vet have tried Simplicef, only to then have almost immediate recurrence, you may want to ask the vet to culture the skin and grow out the bacteria so it can be identified. I would be asking my vet for other options with food if these infections coincided w/ the new food.

| We already grew the culture and determined that his staff is the MRSA (methicillin resistant staff infection). They tested antibiotic after antibiotic to determine which ones would kill this. We have been treating with those specific antibiotics. We do believe that his allergies may be exacerbated by the SO Urinary food and have switched him back to the UD Urinary food he took years ago and had no problem. So hopefully this will change things around, along with the allergy shots. I certainly feel your pain if you have had recurring skin infections with staff. My son's yellow lab had the very same thing. She scratched and scratched her skin to the point of many bleeding hot spots. They had to keep doggie tee shirts on her to try to keep her from getting to her spots. She ended up on allergy shots, which proved to be a godsend for her, and she has had clear skin now for over a year. Hopefully you will be able to keep your doggie's skin manageable! |
