| Tapeworms Late Friday night, I found a worm on Max's little rear end. After nearly fainting, I washed his back end. Shortly thereafter, he pooped and I saw more worm parts in his stool. I asked Crystal (Ellie May) if I should take him to the ER. She was probably laughing herself silly, but what do I know? Worms are gross and scary. Took Max to the vet in the morning. Good thing I saved the one stool for testing because we have not seen any worms since. They confirmed the tapeworm and gave me a choice of meds. I chose Drontal, a one dose med. Tapeworms usually come from swallowing fleas, but we have not had any sign of fleas recently. We saw 2 this year, on Teddy. The vet tech suggested Max may have picked it up in bunny droppings or something similar. ewwww We give Heartgard monthly year round, but that doesn't cover tapeworms. I forgot to ask: should I have a follow up stool check done to make sure the dewormer worked?

Good to know. I hope we don't have anymore tapeworms, but I will keep this in mind.

| Teddy's breeder sent him home with a medley of worms and tapes were one. We used drontal and never did the repeat stool. Any dog can swallow a flea and get a tapeworm. Luckily, since the breeder sent teddy home I haven't had the misfortune of seeing a worm.

| PS yes bunnies and squirrels all carry fleas. Just because you haven't seen any does not mean they aren't there waiting to be swallowed up.

| One of our dogs we got when I was growing up got tapeworms it's so creepy! We got her from the Amish though and she was covered in fleas so it was suspected she got them from eating the fleas.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Lol Kristin...I would've nearly FAINTED too!!!! Yikes! There is just something about worms that realllllly get my willies going, I don't know why. Glad, though, that if soemthing *is* wrong w/ your baby, that it's just something minor and fixable. But still, I woulda passed out .

| Oh Kristin, I know that must have been so creepy for you, but thank goodness it really is a minor thing that can be so easily fixed. Many years ago my mini Schnauzer got tapeworms, and I found what seemed like dried tiny grains of rice on my bed where she slept. Really creeped me out.

| Our vet's office seems to think Max and Teddy are strict indoor dogs who never touch the ground. The techs were making faces and talking to me like, "I CANNOT believe your dog has worms!" LOL We live in a woodsy neighborhood and walk in woodsy places. The one woman said to Max, "I didn't take you for the hiking type."

| Hi Kristen, when we brought Sissy home she came with her own pets (ear mites, fleas and tapeworms). We woke up one of those first morning to find "rice" in our bed, gross I know. I stuck some in a little bottle and ran to the vet and the receptionist took it for them to test but she said she didn't think it was tapeworm. They called a couple hours later for me to come over and get medication. I told them I wanted them both treated and they did because I didn't want them passing them back and forth. Its great when they tell you something is wrong. Sissy is real good at telling me she has poop stuck to her butt and needs a bath! The vet felt they didn't need to be retested and all her following check ups have never shown any sign of the little buggers.
