| I thought the VCA was supposed to be against it encouraging all vets to be against raw feeding?

| I'm not sure the VCA is what I meant but I do remember a big vet organization decided to be against raw.

| Raw aside (and yes, the majority of vets are against it for various reasons), I'd be very careful with a diet like this. I know it is appealing to raw feeders and people with a holistic view point, but it is also not formulated to meet the criteria of a good kidney diet (set by veterinary nutritionists). One of the major objectives is to lower phosphorus. They have not done this. I can see holistic vets gravitating toward this, but mainstream vets won't, nor will boarded nutritionists. ,

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Interesting to see this. Is the Kidney formula the only one they're doing? I would hope they'd do more than that if they're going to jump into the Rx food...maybe they'll add more later.

| This is from Dr. Jean Dodd's blog: Dr. Jean Dodds' Pet Health Resource Blog | Should companion animals who have chronic kidney disease eat lower protein diets? I've read many success stories of cats & dogs in kidney/ renal failure improve on a raw diet. They lived years longer than predicted & died of either old age or other complications, not from renal failure. I think they're also coming out w/a RX liver formula for liver compromised dogs.

cut and pasted from Darwin's website Kidneys that are not functioning well need help with phosphorus binding. Integrative KS contains chitosan (Vetequinol’s Epakitin™) which can help bind phosphorus in the food, before it gets to the kidneys. The diet itself is low in phosphorus. Raw foods can naturally contain lower levels of phosphorus than processed foods. How is it not formulated to meet the criteria of a good kidney diet? I'm not being argumentative, just curious should the issue ever come up. I'm still in the learning stages of raw feeding and I only have what I've seen in my own dog to base my opinions on. I feed Darwin's to my little and she is doing awesome. | |

The very high level of animal protein will come with a higher level of phosphorus. Protein doesn't necessarily have to be lowered right away, but the recommendation is to lower it was the BUN starts to rise. While protein does not cause kidney problems, it can make them worse both through excess phosphorus consumption and extra, unnecessary nitrogen. I'm not sure if they have published their clinical trials done on dogs with kidney disease. That would be of interest. Currently, the studies do not say high protein, moderate/high phos, etc. I could not feed my dog a diet that goes against all current research. This diet makes no scientific sense to me and I would personally need more than anecdotal evidence to consider it.
