| 5 month old yorkie's leg clicking While trying to brush Max today after his bath his leg was clicking or snapping or cracking??? I really don't know but it was a very small noise. He was on his back in my lap and tends to fight brushing sometimes so he was sort of running in place upside down.. What could this be? Am I looking at major trouble or is it normal. He has a vet visit coming soon and I do plan to let him know but in the meantime I thought I'd see if anyone here can help? |

| Could it be his patella or something subluxating and making the noise as it does? Usually joints crack and pop. Just be sure to mention this to the vet.

| Sounds like it could be Luxating Patella. I would tell your vet about it.

| It could be LP or arthritis even in a puppy. I heard the clicking sounds with Buster when he was a puppy as well. I think it is the joints cartilage popping. Buster eventually was diagnosed with LP which is Luxating Patella and arthritis when he was 1 1/2. The bottom of the knee cap is a V with LP the V is too shallow/narrow so the top bone slides out of the V. It usually pops back in. When this happens you will see your dog extend their leg to the side stiffly, or hop on one leg until the knee cap pops back into the groove of the V. LP is graded 1-4 with the lower grades 1-2 you usually restrict jumping on/off furniture, fast cornering/skidding on wood floors. Adding supplements like Glucosamine is helpful, I use Cosequin. Usually the leg will pop out and back in with no serious consequences. It will wear down the knee cap so arthritis is a possibility. For grade 3-4 surgical repair is often recommended. They deepen the groove of the V and sometimes stabilize it with a pin. It is best to see a Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon for the final diagnosis and the surgery. They will be restricted to crate rest for 8 weeks after surgery with gradual weight bearing short walks but NO PLAYING - RUNNING- JUMPING as this can undo the repair. The clicking in Buster's front legs is from arthritis in his wrists due to poor breeding. Buster had LP grade 3/4 in his back legs we chose to operate on the leg that was giving him problems and wait on the other leg. If you are considering getting insurance get it (and wait until the it kicks in) before you have the LP diagnosed. If the problem is diagnosed before you get insurance it is considered a preexisting condition so it would not be covered. Also make sure the insurance covers genetic defaults. I have Petplan and they covered Buster. I have heard good things about Trupanion as well.

| Did your vet tell you what grade? Some good things to do for a dog wil LP is to not let them get over weight, put them on a joint supplement, and limit jumping. Swimming is really good for dogs with LP.

| It sounds to me like it's probably luxating patella. Our little Maggie has grade 3 LP in both back legs. When I dry her off, those little knees pop like crazy. I have to be SO careful. She has only had one real flare-up where we had to take her to the vet for an injection and some pain and anti-inflamatory meds, and had to keep her rested so it would get better. She has been fine ever since. She is not in pain or anything, so the vet agreed that as long as it isn't bothering her or becoming a chronic problem for her, that we can just wait and watch her closely to see how she does. It it ever gets to being a real problem then we'll have to get surgery. Your vet should be able to check for this very easily and tell you if that's what it is or not. If so, then the vet should be able to tell you what grade it is (grade 1 through 4, with 4 being the worst). I would have the pup checked and get advice from the vet. If not satisfied, there's nothing wrong with getting a 2nd opinion. In the meantime, I'd be careful with those back legs. Good luck!
