Hey guys,
My little 5mo old Chewy has had runny eyes since we got him 5 weeks ago. I dont so much care about the staining because he is a chocolate yorkie and the staining is the color of his hair. But, the drainage has caused him to have this yeasty smell. I talked to my vet about it and she said that I just needed to trim the hair around his eyes ( he has ALOT of hair) and wash the areas with warm water. Well.... I have done this and he still has that yeasty smell. There is no infection of his eyes, its just that the drainage has created this yeasty enviornment. Can anyone offer any solutions to to help get rid of the smell? I tried a 50/50 solution of apple cider vinegar and water which does seem to get rid of the smell, but I have to do this everyday. I just feel like its just covering up the problem temporarily. I have talked to my vet twice a about this and she just seems to blow me off about it "Just wash with warm water" she says

Well its not working. Any solutions would be appreciated!

The constant moisture on the face can cause a red yeast infection....hence the stains and the odor you describe. Typically antibiotics are used to clear up the infection.
Next on the list would be an attempt to determine why he has excessive tearing. Clogged tear ducts, a slightly turned in eyelid, food allergies can all be a cause.

Ask the Veterinarian: Puppy's eyes, small breed dogs, large breed dogs

What are you feeding? Riley had runny eyes.... Literally a line running down from both eyes and excessive eye boogers when he was eating FROMM and his Vet Confirmed that it Was indeed from a food allergy. [He had some other symptoms as well...]. I switched him to Canine Caviar and he has Non whatsoever... I don't even have to wipe his face or eyes at all like I had to before.

I kinda figured it was Red yeast from what I had researched on the internet, but like I said my vet keeps blowing me off about it

I feed him Nutrisource for puppies and its grain free. My other 2 older dogs dont have this problem. Chewy had this problem when I got him.. The smell was awful!

Nutrisource is a good food.
A friend of mines pup had a red yeast infection and her Vet gave her a round of antibiotics to clear it up.

I assuming that it would be antibiotic eye drops and not a pill??

If our vet kept blowing me off like that, they would no longer be our vet. Please consider a second opinion/new vet. They should be more helpful in determining what is causing the excess eye drainage/staining. Also look at the ingredients in the food, sometimes even the best foods can have something that triggers an allergic reaction in a pup.

Yeah... It was eyedrop form.
Do you think his hair is poking his eyes?
I keep Riley's face a little longer. I keep his bangs back with a clip or his Ninja Knot!! LOL
Or is he teething... ? I know sometimes puppies will have more drainage when they are teething.

Teething can cause excessive eye drainage!!

Red yeast, which commonly grows in the corner of dog's eyes, is caused by the buildup of bacteria and moisture from excessive tearing!! So, Yes, that could Totally be it!!

I was just about to post about Wallee 's eyes when I saw your thread so thought I'd jump in too. Hope you don't mind. When Wallee wakes up in morning he has a lot of eye gunk which I have been cleaning with a warm wetbaby cloth . It has no smell and his eyes don't seem to run when he is awake. It's only there when he has been sleeping a while.
Is this normal? I keep the hair around his eyes trimmed.

I had the same problem with mine. She is now on grain free food and bottled water ~ this has made all the difference! She is almost tear free. I use natural eye cleaning pads in the morning to clean out the sandman deposits from the night and then she is good for the day!
