| Floating Rib Cage Have you guys ever felt a little bump under your dogs rib cage? It is like an inch to 1/2 inch (depends on how small/big your dog is) under where the rib cage meets.. (Its a very hard bump, doesn't really move around, feels like a bone) I felt this on Peanut and freaked out! I know I have felt it before and they Vet said it was normal... well I wasn't sure so I took him to the Vet to have him double check, he needs his nails and anals done anyway!! Well after goggling it, it appears that it's called a floating rib. I guess the last rib isn't connected- You can see it on this diagram. Scroll down to the Rib drawing. Anatomy and Physiology of Animals/The Skeleton - Wikibooks, open books for an open world When I goggled it I saw a lot of people asking about it, I don't think a lot of people know about this, so I thought I would post it so people don't freak out like I did, now 2 times!!

| I guess that doesn't surprise me since humans have floating ribs as well...I had never noticed that on Toki though (I just tried to feel it on her and she was like "what the heck are you doing?" lol) Your post reminds me of when I took Toki to the vet and asked what this hard white growth from her gums was (we had her baby teeth removed and then a few months later I noticed some white lump near one of her upper canines and thought maybe she got something lodged there that she was chewing on). My vet was like, um, that's a tooth (*facepalm*) lol. I thought all of her adult teeth were in so how was I supposed to know more were still on the way??? haha It's still good to hear from the vet that things are fine though! I think a lot of us are just hyper-vigilant (I know I am!) about making sure that absolutely nothing is wrong with our babies and that everything is normal...it's always better to go ahead and ask anyway though |

| My Isabella has that too. It used to freak me out, until the vet told me that some dogs just have that little protrusion. I hate the way it feels when I pick her up, though, it feels like I"m going to hurt her

| Interesting!!! I've noticed sometimes while petting Jackson that his rib feels different in that area, always just thought since he was skinny/muscular that it was just ... the way the ribs felt!! lol. I bet you this is what it is!

| Momo has one too! @ 1st, I though he broke a rib bc it protruded & it's much shorter than the other side...of course I rushed him to the vet & he's fine. I'm kind of a hypochondriac when it comes to them! loll

| I just noticed this on Macy a few weeks ago. She only has it on her right side. I noticed the end of the rib was sticking out instead of curving inward.

| Milo has it to. My vet told me what it was because I had felt it and was worried he has a broke bone. She said it normal.

| Oh my goodness!!!! I'm so glad I checked here! I've been worried about my baby girls ribs for awhile and the hubby told me it was normal, of course, I didn't believe him. I'm so glad to know that her weird rib is just as described here. |
