| Will wet food help prevent dehydration? My dog is recovering from dehydration-went to the vet for fluids yesterday. Her tummy is still acting funny and she will only let me hand feed her some wet food every now and then. Will this help prevent dehydration? Since the subcu. fluids yesterday she has not really drank any water or seems interested. |

| Yes, or you can soak kibble in water, I soak mine in boiling water and let it cool down and keep extra in the fridge. It's normal for dogs after getting fluids to not get back to drinking right away. They should drink by the 2nd day though... at least a little bit, and then their intake should gradually increase.

| Do you know how to check for dehydration? Wet food can help, but she also will likely not want to drink anything if given wet. If she is drinking almost nothing now, then yes, it is very good. The excess fluids can collect in the chest area and sit there for awhile. Feel any bulges down in that area (heart area)? They should be used up by now, so she could dehydrate again.

I have also been supplementing her with water using a syringe, putting some in her mouth. I may try to add some moistened dry food into her dinner tonight. | |

| Sounds like she is okay then... If the gums start to go tacky, that would be a reason to go back to the vet immediately.

| If I need to get the pups to drink I try chicken broth (homemade, no salt) for the real kids I use flat 7UP! |
