| spay/neuter question Rocco and Dottie were born July 9th. They are scheduled to be neutered/spayed on Dec. 8th. they will be 2 days shy of 22 weeks old. Is this too young for them to be neutered/spayed? My vet told me he likes to do it at 6months. i am worried about being 2 weeks and 2 days short of 24 weeks. |

| I just took Mabel in to be spayed yesterday and she is 25 weeks but is only 3lbs 5oz. I worried more about her smaller size then her age - as someone mentioned yesterday, they had their hamster spayed so maybe weight shouldn't be an issue either. I know that vets will spay kittens and puppies sometimes when they are only 8 weeks old. Hopefully someone who is more knowledgeable about this will answer your question. Good luck! |

| My vet wanted to do Lulu's when she was just about 4 months old. I told her I wanted to wait til 7-8 months. I wanted Lulu to get a little bigger & I wanted to have any retained baby teeth removed at the time of her spay, so waiting longer allowed her to lose some teeth on her own. She's 7 months old now & I will be scheduling her spay soon.

| I would definitely tell the vet of your concerns. Also, I liked waiting until the 7-8 month mark due to the baby teeth. If some needed to be pulled because they weren't coming out, then you don't need to do a second round of anesthesia IF that occurs.

| Early spays and neuters can cause problems later in life with joints, growth in general, cancers and urinary incontinence. Too late can also cause problems... I would discuss this with my vet.

| I had Raley neutered at 7 1/2 months. He did GREAT!!! I personally did not feel comfortable doing it too early and the vet we use prefers puppies be around 6 months old prior to the surgery. I also think you should just talk to your vet and let him/her know your concerns! Good luck!!

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | I've always done it early (4 months) on my larger dogs. The only reason I held off till 6 months for Rhett and 8 months for Scarlett was out of concern for retained puppy teeth.

| Hot Rod was done at 6 1/2 mos and his baby teeth. Maggie had her baby teeth done at the same time as well. they both did fine. Good luck with what you and your vet decide.

| I, totally, agree w/early spay/neuters causing problems, later in life...However, what information do yo have about being too late w/spay? The only issue I would be concerned about late spay, might be mammary cancer...However, as long as the girl has only had 1 or 2 heats, I'm not so sure the percentages are significantly that much higher...I would like to know about issues w/too late spay/neuter...thanks... |

No Longer a Member | My vet prefers to do little dogs around 9 months, she hates having to pull baby teeth and wants to give them time to come out naturally. She will remove any retained during the spay/neuter but likes to give them a chance. I waited until Rizzo was 11 months old, and we didn't need to have any baby teeth removed, they all came out on their own! If you have concerns, bring them up with your vet. My only concern would be if the little lady went into heat before having either one fixed and you had an accidental preg. If nothing else, I'd have the boy done first as a neuter is less invasive and then wait a little while for the girl. But that would be what I would do, they are your babies only you can decide what works best for you. |

I have been a member on YT for a very short time and all you guys are so wonderful with your help and quick replies. I have already learned so much from you all. Just want to say thank you, and yes this site is VERY addicting!!! |

| Good luck with Rocco. My yorkie/maltese mix was neutered at 4 months. I just had my 6 month old yorkie puppy, Max neutered yesterday. The vet pulled 3 teeth. He had laser surgery and today, although he's quite sleepy is doing very well.

| That should be fine. I'd probably do it at 5.5-6 months for the girls and wouldn't have a problem waiting with the boys. No reason to do it at 4-4.5 months, but there are good reasons not to, esp. with the girls (spay incontinence in particular).

YorkieTalk Newbie! | When I spoke to my Vet he said that as Csininbaba was small (2lbs) he would rather wait and give her the shot so she wouldn't come into season. She has the next one around Christmas and every 6 months! Really works for us, I don't want her to be operated on yet! |
