Donating YT 500 Club Member | Holistic Select... or Acana... I am confused with dog food.. Ok Taycie has been on Blue Buffalo primarly since I got her. She is now 7 months old. I have tried Nature's Variety Prairie and she loved it but she had some seriously loose stools she liked it but her tummy didn't. We also have tried The Honest Kitchen and the same thing happened but her stools were not only loose but smelly and HUGE. Now that Blue Buffalo has issued a recall I want to find a new food all together. I kept going back to it because it seemed to work with her for the best. But I am cautious to keep continuing with it.. I went to the local pet food store and I ended up with a bag of Holistic Select. The lady opened a sample for Taycie and she went CRAZY for it. It was the cutest thing and she licked her bowl clean tonight.. leaving most of the BB behind.. I must admit I am SCARED TO DEATH of high protein... always have been. But I am curious... I want her to have the best of the best. The back of the HS food says her protein is no less the 30 and crude fat is no less the 20 is that a high fat content??? Seems high to me... The reason I left acana behind it had 33 percent protein but now I am realizing the fat content was only 18 percent... slightly less.. What would you do??? I want the best for her and I need your help! I have also read that not every dog does good on high protein and some dogs start to urinate more and start drinking more which means they could not be handling the high protein.. should I watch for that as well? Does anyone have reading material on dog nutrition they recommend?? To help ease my mind?? |

| I have had an almost similar situation. You may want to read my thread. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...i-give-up.html The only Acana food that I found with a lesser protein content is not available in the U.S. - the Lamb and Apple. The 3 availabe in the U.S. all had high levels of protein. Excellent food though - and my dogs did love it - but unfortunately did not agree with their system. Both Orijen and Acana are great foods - but did not agree with my little guy. Good luck to you.

| I have those same concerns, but decided to try Acana Grasslands anyway. I just fed my babies a small portion of it along with solid gold and they devoured the grasslands and left the solid gold. LOL. Sold gold is excellent food as well. I'm only trying something different because my older yorkie tends to get bored with his food. He's had solid gold off and on for two years and has done great on it. I wasn't much help, sorry. Just know you are not alone in your concerns. |

| High protein causing problems is a myth. If the protein is coming from GOOD sources, (i.e. meat) then it's not a problem. If the high protein is coming from grains or vegetables mainly, then it could cause issues because the liver has to overwork to process those kind of proteins. High protein is only an issue if your dog already has liver problems, but even so, some people feed their liver comprised dogs raw food with no problems (I'm not advising this, just saying). I dunno, I mean, I personally feel that the protein levels above, like, 42 percent aren't really entirely necessary. But Acana is 33 percent which isn't really that high? I mean, even the crappier foods contain protein contents that high like Royal Canin 33 and some variates of Purina but their protein is coming from corn, etc. The early research that convinced people of the myth of high protein damaging dog's liver was done on rats which are omnivores and their digestive system works entirely different than dogs which are carnivores. Rat's bodies are not designed to handle high protein the way dogs are. I am not aware of any research on dogs that points to high protein damaging dog's liver. I might be mistaken here, but in addition to using rodents, I believe the source of most of the protein was corn gluten, so it was pretty invalid regarding canines and high protein from meat on two fronts. Btw, I'm also not totally against grains. I think alot won't hurt them and I feed a few treats (Zuke's, for example) that contain barley, etc. I just think most grains are non beneficial, but some won't hurt either of course. Check out Orijens White Paper: http://www.orijen.ca/orijen/ORIJEN_White_Paper.pdf Some pretty good stuff in there.

| High Protein By accident I put my yorkie ozzie on blue wild life and he blew up like a balloon, I was horrified so I talked to my vet and changed his food to Blue turkey basic he lost some weight thank god but still not enough. I cut his portions down and hopefully that will help the blue wild life had 44% protein way way to much for a yorkie but he did love it. He eats the turkey and once a day I give him a teaspoon of wet blue for small breed, my vet told me to give all my dogs a teaspoon of wet with their dry once a day new research report she had gotten back the day I was there showed its better for dogs and cats to have both. I did not here of a Blue recall in my area, however I have a friend who has large breed dogs with digestive issues who swears by Nitro dog foods so If they recall blue I would give that a try...
