| Frontline dangerous??? Hello, I have two Yorkies and I'm using Frontline. I was recently told that if the dogs lick the Frontline they can die. Is this true? |

My cat used to scratch it with her back paws and then lick it off and she would start foaming at the mouth, I asked the vet about it and they said the cat would be fine, she was foaming because she didnt like the taste but that nothing bad would come of it. I now put it on all my animals and then hold them for a few minutes and then keep a close eye on them to make sure they dont eat it because I cant imagine its GOOD for them... but I dont think they would die if they licked a little bit.

| ya know.. I am split on this. I will tell you why. Last July we were on a trip in the RV with all of the yorkies. I live in the CA desert where we do NOT have fleas. But to be safe.. I had all 5 treated with Frontline prior to leaving on the trip since we would be travelling into Florida and Texas. All was fine until we got to Florida. ALL 5 got fleas after spending 2 hours at my elderly aunts house. Her yorkie was severely infested and since she was 92 years old.. she did not see them.. But WE did.. we saw them all over the place and left as soon as we realised it. By the time we got back to the RV.. we could see that ALL of mine were covered in fleas. So we stopped at a pet supply and asked what we should do. They recommended an over the counter spray for thier bedding and a shampoo for them. The product they recommended was advertised as a TOTALLY NON TOXIC NATURAL flea treatment. We were instructed to shampoo them then to spray them as well along with thier bedding. So we followed the instructions to a T. The fleas immediately were gone and we breathed a sigh of relief. We continued on our trip and 3 days later my 5 1/2 yr old Sunnie became totally lethargic and his gums were pure white. We rushed him to an ER vet in Texas where we had just arrived. Sunnie had been seen licking his legs and apparently had ingested the flea spray (that was "all natural, non toxic") He stayed overnight at the ER vet and they told us he would be fine to pick him up at 6am. When we arrived to pick him up, the vet came out and told me he had just passed away. Now I don't know about Frontline.... but ANY flea medication INGESTED could kill your pet. Frontline would be hard to ingest as it is put on between the shoulder blades. I so wish I knew then what I have learned since. The way the flea medication works is like this... fleas have a waxy coating on their bodies. the flea sprays dissolve the coating and the flea literally "explodes". This was told to me by the owner of the company that makes the flea spray I used. I am thinking that if a flea can explode from this, what does it do to their stomaches if they ingest it? Well, I can tell you it isn't pretty. Sunnie already had a sensitive stomach and the flea medication upset it so badly that it caused his death. My vet here at home told me I was lucky I did not lose all 5 of them. My whole purpose of writing all of this is NOT to say that Frontline will kill your baby, but rather to remind everyone that anything your pet could ingest COULD kill them as well.

Sadly Deb, yes I did use the spray as well.. JUST LIKE THE DIRECTIONS SAY. I used it on ALL of them but Sunnie was the one who got sick from it, but I also remembering him licking his legs. When I got to the ER vets and he told me it most likely was the flea medication that caused him to have a problem (based on the bloodwork and analyzing the contents of his stomach) I immediately called Mike on my cell ... he was still at the RV with the other dogs... and told him to get ALL of them in the shower and wash them down. This was before Sunnie died. By the time I left the ER vets that night.. he seemed to be better,,, he was (or seemed to be) fine when I left that night... but died by morning. The vet said unfortunately the damage was done and didn't think anything would have saved him then. All of the vets were in agreement that it wasn't likely the Frontline.. but felt pretty strongly that it WAS the de flea

| I have always used regular dawn dish detergent... scrub really well and it will kill all the fleas that are currently on them. I usually just use a good conditioner after in case, although I havent noticed it bother their skin at all anyway.

| I absolutely agree with using Dawn.. and what is really sad.. given that I have NEVER had to worry about fleas with mine.. is when I went into the pet supply. I asked for someone who was knowledgeable about fleas. They brought out a rep who seemed to know what he was talking about. He recommended the De Flea... I asked him if it would be any better than just bathing them in Dawn and he said that the De Flea would be the best since I would have to spray the RV... their bedding.. etc. Told me how the fleas lay eggs and they will start hatching in days and we will be back at square one. I felt so guilty after Sunnie passed away because I SHOULD have called my vet at home and asked them. I just trusted these people who knew all the buzz words.

| Hi, I'm new here with my 8 mos old boy Marty who is a Morkie. He's a tick magnet and I was hoping to find out what is best to keep him tick and flea free. Now I'm nervous about Frontline, which my friend the vet recommends. I haven't had a dog in years, so any advice from anywhere on the forum is going to be so welcomed! |

trust your vet. Frontline should not cause the type of problem I had. Frontline is applied between the shoulder blades and there i no way the dog can ingest it
