It is a chemical and you never really know how a dog will react to it but I doubt most would die from licking it.
My cat used to scratch it with her back paws and then lick it off and she would start foaming at the mouth, I asked the vet about it and they said the cat would be fine, she was foaming because she didnt like the taste but that nothing bad would come of it.
I now put it on all my animals and then hold them for a few minutes and then keep a close eye on them to make sure they dont eat it because I cant imagine its GOOD for them... but I dont think they would die if they licked a little bit.
