YT Addict | Hot spots Hello everyone all though I do not need information on my Yorkie Pebbles, I am having trouble with Calvin my Lhasa. Knowing lots of you have other breeds of dogs as well I thought maybe someone would have some advise for me. Yesterday evening I found an irritated spot below is ear. I had a friend say that it was a hot spot. I have looked on line and have done a lot of reading but just thought maybe someone else has experienced this. Reading on line his diet is just what he needs it has no grain in it and I even give them filtered water. So I have eliminated his diet as the problem. I have never cut his fur other than around his nose and eyes but he still has a full long coat could this be the problem? I would be grateful for any advise thanks, worried Mommy here!

| Have you tried putting a cortizone spray on the hot spot. Places like petco usually sell it

| Hot spots can come on like wild fire...i would call your vet and see if they can do anything---hot spot dogs are usually put on antibiotics and they clean it out real well, good luck!

YT Addict | I have a vet appointment today at 4, but was hoping I could help him until then and learn a bit before I go to the vet. I was hoping to get into the vet this morning but they were busy first available appointment was not until 4. So for now I am keeping him beside me and not letting him scratch it. Can't wait until 4!

Good! I hope he does well! Be prepared, they may need to shave his hair to get to his skin to clean it!

| I have only experienced hot spots on my big dogs, but this is what worked for me... Trim away most of the hair (the vet is likely to shave it...) Make a strong cup of tea, take a little bit out to cool, wash the area very well, then dry completely with a paper towel. Repeat every 2-4 hour, or so. It is anti-bacterial, and the bacteria is what causes the itch. Good luck.

YT Addict | Thanks everyone for all the great suggestions!! So Calvin had his vet appointment and it went well. They did shave a big spot and the infection was a lot bigger than I thought. Anyway they gave him a shot of antibiotics that lasts for 14 days and then they gave me a cream to put on 3 times a day. So this morning I took a look at his hot spot and his hair is all stuck in it again. I am hoping that he will let me use a warm cloth later to loosen the hair and put more cream on. So again thanks so much for all your suggestions and letting me share with you yesterday I was so nervous. Today is a better day.

| I use to have a bigger dog that use to get hot spots all the time...it drove me nuts trying to find out what the cause of it was. We never did find out what caused it but someone advised me to put aloe on them and it worked with help soothing them. Good luck!

| O.K. this is old-school information, but my previous vet, who has since retired, said hot spots were caused from the dog ingesting more protein than their bodies used, and it manifested itself through the skin...I don't know if that was correct, but when I cut down on the protein, or increased the exercise, the hot spots would stop appearing..I think he did give me a cortisone type cream to treat with, when the pups got them... |

| I know that Goldens are prone to hot spots...! just remember if your dog goes in a pond, lake, puddle, or even a pool, make sure you bathe them real well, it will help!!!!!!

My vet told me it was bacterial, and the bacteria grows in warm moist places. He "prescribed" a bath and a soft absorbent bed for my GSD!
