I have only experienced hot spots on my big dogs, but this is what worked for me...
Trim away most of the hair (the vet is likely to shave it...)
Make a strong cup of tea, take a little bit out to cool, wash the area very well, then dry completely with a paper towel. Repeat every 2-4 hour, or so. It is anti-bacterial, and the bacteria is what causes the itch.
