YorkieTalk Newbie! | Possible toothache My yorkie Barney has been itching one side of his face where his eye teeth/fangs are. His teeth are discolored. I am wondering if he has a toothache and what I should do for him. He is constantly licking like a snake also. I know it is not bad enough for extraction and the risk of losing them is so high with that. Help...

| Welcome to YT. How old is he? If he isn't a puppy anymore and his teeth are discolored, it is very likely that he needs a dental and the vet needs to look around in there and see what is going on. My Yorkie needed nine extractions at age five and if it would have been let go, the chance of organ dysfunction (heart, liver, kidneys) from the bacteria would have been very high. In a healthy dog, anesthesia is safer than letting their teeth go. Yorkies are notorious for this. His teeth will need to be brushed at least 3-4 times a week. Did he lose all of his baby teeth?

YorkieTalk Newbie! | Barney Update Thanks so much for your input - Barney had a dental and had to have some teeth removed so we are brushing daily. I am trying to recover from the guilt...

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Thanks for the update. Don't feel guilty, yorkies are notorious for bad teeth. I brush Pixie a lot and she still has bad teeth. The main thing is you got Barney in for a dental and know to brush now.
