| How much should I feed my yorkie?? I have just had Sullie a couple of wks. His previous mother said he would eat maybe 1/2 cp of food a day. She left it out for him. Well, since he's been with me he wants to eat a lot more than that. If I put 1/2 cp down in the am, he eats almost all of it at once. So I fed him some more that evening and he ate it too. Since reading on here I understand he needs to eat small meals throughout the day. So is a cup or more enough? He is 10 mths old and is 5 lbs. Thanks, Connie |

| does your vet think sullie (cute name BTW ) is at a healthy weight? he may be going through his last growth spurt therefore eating a bit more than usual...if this is the case, he is still a puppy at 10 months and should be able to eat when he is hungry some dogs can regulate their food intake and only eat when they are hungry...some cannot (my bentley cannot regulate himself so he needs to be schedule fed) and you do need to figure out how much food they need and only give them that...but i would check with your vet first and go from there but to answer your question, in my uneducated opinion, a cup seems like a lot for a 5 pounder but i could be way off my kids - the ones who eat kibble - all eat about 1/2 cup (sometimes a little more) per day hope that helps

| Thank you Lyn. We have not been to the vet yet. I got Sullie 2 wks. ago and made an appt. with the vet to have him fixed FRi. That was the first opening. He seems so healthy, but is boney, are they all this way? I mean there is no fat on him anywhere. It worries me, but I'm used to big dogs, this is my first little dog. |

| I think it depends on the brand/type of food. When Max eats EVO Grain Free he eats less than he is eatting on the Wellness Small Breed and Natural Balance Ultra. He also pooped less on EVO than he is now. The fiber is higher and there is rice in Wellness and NB. Maybe that is why.

and yes, you should be able to feel the ribs when you run your hands down their bodies (i mean the bones should not be protruding and you should not be able to see them) ... you may have to press down a little to feel their ribs but not too much ... little dogs are much different than bigger dogs (my last dog was a 90lb german shepherd so i know what you mean about that ) and it is not healthy for them to be overweight ... they are so small structurally, that extra weight can put added pressure on their joints and legs ... glad you asked about sullie and i hope the vet can help put your mind at ease and i agree with chrissy, the amount of food to feed will depend on the kind of food and the quality of the food...the lesser the quality, the more food they will eat to meet their nutrition needs
