YT 500 Club Member | Rabies and 5-in-1 Vaccines at Same Time? Meg is 4 mo and just under 2 lbs. The vet secretary said I need to give her the rabies and her next 5-in-1 shot together since she doesn't want me to make two appts. Is this ridiculous!?! Should I insist on two appts? I don't even like giving her the 5-in-1 combo vaccination, but the vet here can't get the single vaccinations. Meg had 1 questionable vaccination with a Korean vet two months ago and had 1 5-in-1/Corona at the American vet one month ago. (I live in Korea.) How many more boosters should she get? The vet recommends two more (including the the one she'd give with the rabies).

| When were the vaccines started and how far apart have they been given? Rabies should never be given with any other vaccine.

YT 500 Club Member | The first vaccination (Parvo and Corona) was given on Dec 5, 2008. It was given by a Korean vet and although I have a record saying it was administered, there is no sticker on the records. My vet says that this is important. Meg then had a DHPPL on Dec 25, 2008. This was also given by a Korean vet (no sticker). Then I brought Meg home. I brought her to the American vet on the mil. base and gave her a 5-in-1 (no lepto) on Jan 21, 2009. The vet added the Corona Virus vaccine even though I had previously stated that I did NOT want this vaccine. I didn't know they did it until it showed up on the bill. I have an appt scheduled for Meg on Feb 20. I will get either the Rabies OR the combo, but not both. I need to fly Meg to the US in June, if not sooner. Meg will need the rabies vaccination in order to get into the US, I think. Ellie May, should I schedule another booster for March 20? Or since Meg is so small, will she have had enough? There are some funky viruses floating around in Korea and my vet said to not let Meg outside until she has finished the vaccination schedule in March. But since she is only expected to be 2.5-3 lbs when full grown, I don't want to over-vaccinate her.

YT 500 Club Member | Ellie May, since Meg has now had two Corona Virus vaccinations, should I make sure the vet does not give it to her again, or should I finish the series so she is protected?

| You need to give a minimum of TWO of the combo vaccines, with the last one being AFTER 16 weeks of age for maximum protection. So...since you started her at 6.5 weeks and then 9 weeks and 13 weeks, one more at 16 weeks should be all that is necessary...not two more. She was really vaccinated for the first time too young. Vaccination at 6 weeks can actually suppress the immune system. Vaccines should never be started before 8 weeks of age. Maternal antibodies in the puppies won't allow the vaccines to give any protection until 8-12 weeks of age. Most give a series of 3 vaccines to a puppy, ending at 16 weeks of age. But if you start the vaccines later, 2 vaccines should be enough protection. I don't recommend giving rabies with any other vaccine either. I would wait at LEAST 2-3 weeks after your last combo before giving the rabies vaccine....and if you are able to, I would try to wait until she's 6 months of age as well. If you need her vaccinated with Rabies by June, I would probably wait and do it in May personally. Toy breeds are just so small and I really think it is safer to wait until they are larger and older to give the Rabies vaccination....most puppies do fine regardless, but I always recommend being more cautious and waiting until they are a little older if you can.

| Corona is on the NON-RECOMMENDED list of vaccines so I would not recommend giving it to any dog. It's a safe vaccine for the most part, but there just really isn't a significant disease that warrants being vaccinated for. I believe you should only vaccinate for diseases that are very serious and that the dog will be exposed to: mainly Parvo and Distemper and of course Rabies because of the law

| I dont know much about the laws there but there is NO WAY I would get ANY vaccine at the same time as the rabies vaccine! Especially considering her size. I hope someone sees your post that can help you because this sounds very dangerous to me. Best wishes to you! I hope all goes well for you!

And it's okay that Meg's first two vaccinations may or may not have been effective? My vet said that they may or may not have refrigerated the vaccination, given it correctly, etc.

It's your call on the corona. It is definitely not a core vaccine.

The reason most start with the first vaccine around 8-9 weeks is because maternal antibodies MAY have already worn off. In a lot of cases, puppies this age still have maternal antibodies and this first vaccine does nothing to protect them in the future. However, a lot of puppies go to their new home around this time where they may be exposed to diseases so this early vaccine may protect those puppies whose maternal antibodies were already lost. Honestly, this first vaccine is pretty pointless with the toy breeds since they usually continue to nurse until 6 weeks or so. The second vaccine given (usually around 12 weeks) is usually the first vaccine that is really effective because maternal antibodies are usually gone in all dogs by 12 weeks of age. If it were my puppy, I'd be satisfied by only giving one more at 16/17 weeks as you are doing. Then you KNOW she's had two effective vaccines. Whether or not the vaccines were stored properly or not, being given at 6 and 9 weeks of age probably wouldn't have offered much protection anyway. However, if you feel more comfortable giving that next one at 20 weeks, that's up to you. I just hate the thought of overvaccinating dogs and like to vaccinate the least amount possible and still get protection...but ultimately it's your decision.

YT 500 Club Member | Oh, and I wish I could just have titers run, but the vet here isn't able to do them. Let me tell you that I am anxious to get back to the US and be able to have a choice in vet/veterinary care.
