Dandruff problem and Greenies. I need advice!! Sammie is a ten month old puppy, he weighs about 7 lbs. 1) We went to the vets office about a month ago and the doctor told us that he had dry skin but it was not that serious. I assumed his skin was just a little dry because it's winter. His fur his silver so I was not able to tell until today that he has dandruff. What can I do to cure/relieve this problem? Vitamins or shampoo change? 2) Greenies. Are they good or bad for your dogs? I read other forums and alot of people claim that they are bad but some say its good because it serves as a vitamin supplement. I brush his teeth everyday when I can and at least every other day so his teeth are in very good condition. Thanks

dry skin problem Hi, my shepherd has a very dry skin and the vet recommended HESKA FA Granules. It has done wonders for his skin and coat, It's about $38 per container but a yorkie wouldn't need much so it would last a long time. youjust add it to the food and they like the taste, Pam

Is Sammie scratching, excessively licking, losing his hair, or have soars? If not I would say she just needs a good salmon oil supplement to help moisturize his skin. I live in Chicago and our winter weather is very dry and cold. My Yorkie, Jack, had pretty bad dandruff on his ears and body that first winter I had him. My groomer suggested I change his food and put him on Solid Gold "Wee Bits" and his skin and coat looked amazing in just a few months! A good salmon oil supplement will do the same thing.

Oh and make sure you aren't giving him too many baths. Jack only needs one once a month or so unless he gets really dirty in the summer playing outside. If your in a low humidity climate or one with winter weather you might want to try a humidifier too.

Someone else had also asked about the safety of Greenies on Yorkie Talk. I work for Greenies and want to assure you they are absolutely safe for Yorkies. In fact, beginning in April 2009 they will only be sold through pet specialty retailers and veterinary hospitals. I'd like to share the following statement with you as we are trying to get the word out that Greenies are not only safe; they are great for your pet's teeth: Canine Greenies® dental chews for dogs were reformulated in 2006. There have been no reports of blockages or obstructions since the product was re-introduced. Greenies are safe, soluble, easily digestible and a tasty alternative to brushing your pet’s teeth. In fact, Greenies help control plaque and tartar according to the independent Veterinary Oral Health Council. Greenies are nutritionally balanced and come in five sizes based on a pet’s weight. Pets should only have dental chews appropriate for their weight. | Hi, no you continue to give the supplement indefinately. the amount for a yorkie is about 1/8 of the scoop so very small amount. you give 1/4 scoop for the first 4 weeks or so good luck Pam |
