Floppy Ears Hi. I just got my first Yorkie he's 8 weeks old and his ears are floppy. I know that the breed standard is for them to have pointy ears (i'm sure there is a proper term, i just don't know it.) Is there any medical reason for them to be pointy? Because if there isn't I'll just leave them floppy. Thanks!

I have notice with 2 of my yorkies get ear infection the vet says because the ears are not letting any air in then being down like cockerspaniels... they are to old to get them to stand up . so when i got my 3 new ones i took mustache clippers and took all the hair off and taped them up and they never get ear infection's.. plus in my opinion they look better and that is the way yorkie ears are suppose to be..

I think they are cute either way. I have one 16mo.male with ears straight up and another 7mo.female with one up one down. Sometimes her ears are straight up other times they are both down or one up one down depends if shes really tired. I say whats the difference they are so cute. Unless your going to show them who cares. It gives them character.

Hi Ducky: Welcome to yorkietalk and congratulations on your new baby! It is so exciting having a new baby! There is no love like yorkie love, and you are in for a real treat! I have three babies - ages four, two, and six months. My youngest baby has large ears and I had to tape them for a few days and I am pleased to say that her ears are now up all the time! I decided to remedy her ears because they are larger, and I wanted them up because yorkies are so prone to ear infection. In fact, she did have double ear infections when I brought her home. But getting those ears up, pulling the inside hair, and a round of treatment and she has been infection free since then! The thought of taping her ears was a little scary, but it did not hurt her and she really didn't seem to mind at all. The tape came right off and it didn't pull her hair or anything. I used blue painter's tape. If you decide to tape your baby's ears, here's a link for a great how to: Yorkie Maltese Products and Bows: Grooming Instructions This site had great pictures - it was like "grooming for dummies" and I really needed the visuals! Someone else posted about shaving the ears before taping them, which is an important step. My two year old has "floppy ears" and I have never done anything about it. I love the way she looks, and the ears add to her personality! It's great to have you here. I've found a lot of useful information and am very excited about meeting folks that are as obsessed with their dogs as I am with mine! Can't wait to see pictures of your new baby!

thank you! Thanks so much. I think I'll ask the vet her opinion on if he's at a high risk for ear infections before i make any final decisions but he looks so darn cute floppy. Thank you all for your help and i'll give you some pictures once i figure out how...haha.
