| Members feeding PREY? - have questions I'm very interested in switching my dogs raw when she gets to a year old. But I would like to know personal obstacles that members here have had. Pls share stories! I'd love advices, tips, I may not get from net research. Also, people who feed raw but not PREY (barf?), why do you not feed prey? Why do some people homecook instead of feeding raw? Is it true feeding raw is cheaper than feeding processed foods? Also, if i calculate the 2% of bodyweight you need to feed on raw, Mocha will eat only about 40-50grams.. that seems so little to me?? Thank you beforehand |

| I feed PMR and I have to say it was a lot easier than I thought it would be! I guess I would have to say the most difficult thing was getting them to learn that they need to eat in the kitchen as they would prefer to drag it to the living room and eat in on the rug. Shopping is a little more work but it's not like I make a special trip, I just have to buy for the dogs as well. I think it costs about the same, maybe slightly more than a good quality dog food. I was feeding Canidae before. And the only other thing I have trouble with is remembering to take something out of the freezer to thaw. Then I wind up thawing in water but I prefer not to do that! |

I have to ask, is it a messy affair, when the dogs eat? Do they get that raw food smell on them afterwards? How many dogs do you have and what breeds are they? Are they doing better on raw than they were on commercial dog food? Do you feed organic/free range? Thank you for all the help

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I feed Natures Variety PreMade Raw Medallions, but I think PMR is great!! Why do I not feed PMR? Um....bc I'm lazy ? Really, it truly is mostly bc of convenience - I adore the convenience of premades. I feel I give my babies so many of the benefits of raw, but I have the convenience of raw-in-a-bag. I then make sure they chew on Bullies and occasional RMBs. Their teeth are beautiful. I spend about $40 a month to feed pre-made to my 2 guys.

I don't think I can swing that my bag of 7kg Orijen costs about that, and I estimate that will last me about 3-4months. I talked to my mom (Lulu is her dog after all), she seems to be taking the idea really well. I'm very surprised Also asked her about the price of free range chicken meat, as I think I will be feeding that mostly, and she says depending on how much the dogs eat, she thinks it will most likely be cheaper than the commercial dog food. I'm not quibbling over money here, but it is a bonus I am still working out what/how to feed if my whole family have to go away, or if we take them to vacations. Aside from that, I don't mind the inconveniences.. I'm not iffy about raw meat, I have a big freezer and I have worked out on how to make each meal convenient Right now I'm just working out on the "proper" things to feed them, ratios and all.. This is actually fun to do! I have to say research on raw feeding is less stressful than looking for the right kibble now THAT was a pain in my petunia.. I just want the best for my babies. Thanks Wylie's Mom!

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | This is the cost of laziness, my dear . Prey model is definitely cheaper! Or, even making your own 'pre-made' is cheaper.

| Heh Even being lazy has a cost these days, lol. Wouldn't making your own premade be bothersome??

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I know Nadia (rawfedyorkieluv) does it in addition to feeding Prey Model - she has her own grinder. I think once you figured out some good "grind" recipes to make, I bet it'd be fairly easy to do! You'd just have to make time to do it, gather supplies and grind 'er up.

My shihtzu has terrible teeth, and she's only 2 years old! She doesn't chew, never was a chewer when she was a pup, but bones she loves them. I am thinking she will take to raw like fish to water. I know my maid sometimes gives her raw meat when she's cooking I don't worry about Mocha, she will eat anything, my little vacuum cleaner, she loves tissue, my sister's slippers and her own poo. OH! That reminds me, do you think she will stop eating her own poo when she switches to raw?? Now THAT will a be a real bonus If you don't mind another question, how much does your yorkie weigh and how much does she eat per day? Mocha is 8 months today and she weighs about 4.5 lbs. I'm trying to get estimates.
