hypoglycemic episodes? - YorkieTalk.com Forums

Hi - I'm new to YorkieTalk (have had our puppy for only a week).

Was wondering if anyone else's baby has had a hypoglycemic episode and what are the symptoms?

We were playing with our Little Louie yesterday and while he was in the middle of a frenzy playing with a toy, he abruptly stopped, his eyes drooped and closed as if he was about to go to sleep. After that he seemed just 'off' for the rest of the night. We gave him some Nutrical right away and this morning he seems better (I think the play session may have been a little too long.) In addition, he really didn't have a good day eating-wise so I don't know if something else may have been affecting him. The info I've read about hypoglycemia is a little "gray"

Any info would be appreciated.

Mine will have white gums and no energy. If they are not eating good or are playing too long they will burn up the sugar/food that they have. I only let the little ones play for a few minutes before they have to go back to quiet time until they are able to eat good and don't have anymore problems. After I give nutri-cal, I make them eat within a few minutes of feeling better and that seems to do the trick.

Hi, my little girl loves to play and although I think she's getting sufficient rest (I find sometimes when she gets over hyper, that I just need to pick her up, cuddle her and soothe her and tell her to settle down). Anyway, I would like to be prepared if she did every have an episode. Can you please tell me what Nutrical is and where to buy it?

Thank you, I'm a bit clueless and want to do this right. I've had her a week and she's settling in nicely, but I know there is always room for improvement and this forum has been very helpful.

I get Nutri-cal from the vet but some of the pet stores may carry it or they carry one that is similar to it. Karo syrup works good also but I like Nutri-cal better. I always have that on hand and we do the gum checks all the time for the little ones or if they don't seem to be themselves. The key is catching whatever problems they have as soon as possible because they are so small. My Emme just hit 2 lbs and she got so sick last week and had to go to the vet...withing minutes of her getting sick, she went downhill fast and had to have IV put in...if we would have waited any longer, I don't think she would be here right now.

Thanks for the input. Our breeder recommended the Nutri-Cal (for puppies) - we found it at PetSmart. We will definitely have to monitor (and limit) the playtime !

He's just such a nosy little mad-man and would much rather be playing than eating at this point. We've also only had him for a week so we're going through a lot of 'trial and error' with respect to the feeding as well as the potty training.

That is a Yorkie for you....they would rather play than eat. My Maltese loves food so we don't have any problems with him, but Emme would rather play and food is on the bottom of her list. She is now getting to play longer but she still has to have time outs and we give her more feedings a day just to make sure she is getting plenty to keep her going.

OMG - You must have been scared to death with the IV thing - I'm assuming that was hypoglycemic related?

I can't imagine the panic. My two kids are adults now but I have to tell you that yesterday's experience with Louie brought me right back to the same anxiety I used to feel when my kids used to get sick.

You had said in the earlier thread that Louie's symptoms could suggest other issues - is there anything else besides the hypoglycemia that we should be aware of if he does that again?

Emme was thought to have Parvo but it turned out to be a bacterial infection in her digestive track. When a dog is sick, there gums will turn white and they will not eat. She was throwing up and had diarrhea along with the white gums and not eating. I always monitor when and what they eat because usually that and the gums are the first signs of something going wrong. As long as they are holding down food and water, then they should be fine. But if they are not eating enough and are getting hyperglycaemic, that can lead to serious problems and death if not treated.

I don't mean to scare you so just watch to make sure that he eats good and let him play but don't let him over do it. Mine are limited to one room where their bed and food is located and when they get to play they can come into the living room and run for about 30 minutes before they are put back into their room for quiet time. Jasper is almost 6 months old and I have never had any problems with him, so he gets to play longer than Emme does. Jasper gets to eat about 3 times a day and Emme eats 4-5 times but she is still recovering and still so little. I have only had her for 3 weeks now so she is still being watched closely.
