| Lexi's Sick - I need Advice It's 4:45am Monday New York time and I'm looking to the kind folks on this forum for advice. This past Friday Lexi was lethargic. She had soft bowls since for a couple of days at that point. Kind of like not solid and not liquid. Saturday she continued to be slow and mushy but she sat at the window and barked at everyone that went by like usual. She vomited a few of times but never in large amounts. I made her some rice but she wouldn't eat it (never does but I tried anyway). Around 7pm she was nosing around her food area and I knew she was hungy so I gave her some of her regular food. She cleaned up the plate. Sunday morning we woke up to a kitchen floor that was completely covered in vomit and diarreah that was watery. She just stood in one place and didn't move for about 1/2 hour. Then she laid down in her bed and got the chills. I call the vet, not our regular vet but an affiliate and took her in. He said she was mildly dehydrated and wanted to keep her for a few hours during which time he gave her water subcutaneously rather than in an IV. She came house with like a little water balloon under the skin. He told me to give her 1/4 of an Imodium table because now she was so hydrated that she just continuously has a stream of very diarreah coming out of her. What a stinky mess! She has been sleeping since she came home at 5:30pm Sunday and now here it is Monday morning. I've given her about 5 cc's of water in a syringe but she hasn't peed since about 10:30pm last night. Here's my thing. All blood work was normal and an xray also showed everything is OK. She has an intestinal upset and I have some medication to soothe her stomach. The vet wants me to take her back again on Monday but I don't feel comfortable. My vet is out of the office till Wednesday. Being everything is normal would you keep her home and keep giving her water until your vet came back? I'm torn. I hate seeing her like this but I know that I've had times when for a couple of days I didn't eat, hardly drank and mostly slept until what I had finally passed. What would everyone else do? Of course, if she seems to really take a turn for the worse, within 1/2 hour of noticing that she'll be at the vets. Help, I'm so worried and sad. |

| I'm sorry to hear that Lexi is sick! Poor girl! Have you changed her food lately? Yorkies have sensitive stomachs....has she eaten anything out of the ordinary before she got sick? Bless her heart. Try giving her pedialyte or even watered down juice...it's sweet and she may drink it better. When Sully got sick like this (out of the blue, no reason, and it lasted a couple of days and he got better) anyway, when he got sick, he wouldn't drink even watered down white grape juice, which he normally loves to try to steal out of my glass, haha. I got a medicine dropper and squirted some water down his throat....oh he hated that but it made me feel better that he was at least getting something down. People on here recommended a boiled chicken breast and plain rice for me when Sully was sick and he ate that (huge relief). Again I'm sorry to hear that Lexi is feeling so icky! I know it's a horrible feeling to know your baby isn't well and not be able to do much about it I hope she gets well soon! At least Lexi got sick on your kitchen floor....when Sully got sick it was at 6 a.m. all over our bed and comforter! Talk about gross, ha, we know all about that!

| Thank you for your response. It's comforting to hear from others about their experience. Now that you mention it I did but and give her some pedialyte last night and she did drink it but vomited shorlty afterwards. I'll try again in a little while with the pediatlyte not that she's been quite the entire night. The vet told me not to feed her last night to give her stomach time to rest. Today I'm to give her white rice cooked mushy, with a little low sodium chicken broth and some chicken flavored baby food. I HAVE to go to work today and it's going to kill me to not be the one tending to her but I know my mom and daughter will take good care. Thanks again for the kind words. As you can tell, I was sitting here waiting for answers. And I think a "Happy Birthday Sully" is in order! |

| How is Lexi doing today? Did you end up taking her in, or are you waiting until your vet is back tomorrow? I hope she is getting better. Let us know. Hugs!

| Jogi37 - Thanks so much for asking after Lexi. She's starting to perk up a bit...stealing socks, ripping papers to shred, etc. She's drinking and eating but since I gave her the 1/4 Imodium on Sunday evening, she hasn't pooped. One extreme to the other, literally. Hopefully her piping will open up tomorrow. I never did call the vet back. I'm kind of upset with him. He was very nice but Lexi had this lump under her arm for 2 days that felt like a water balloon. I think she was over hydrated. She was peeing so much and didn't even start drinking normally again until this morning. The bill for 5 hours of 'puppy sitting' came to $427.00. They know that we could never let out babies go without care and they take full advantage. My vet is back tomorrow and I'll give him a call and tell him what went on She's such a great little dog - I've been loving picking up the hundreds of shredded pieces of paper because it spells good health. By the way, I'm from NY. Staten Island to be exact. I've tried posting pictures but I get a message that they're too big. I'll figure it out soon. Thanks again! |

| To Red98Vet - also wanted to thank you for your well wishes. I'm gonna take a stab at it and guess that it was too much love. My entire family loves her and dotes on her. Talk about spoiled. My daughter said she's jealous. I think the 'just a little taste' of people food got her this way. I think everyone got such a scare that they've learned their lessons. |

| Great news to hear Lexi is doing better. I understand how we all worry so much when our babies don't feel well. I have worried myself sick during the times when Schatzie isn't well... Hugs to Lexi

| my baby has always eaten a little turkey & gravy or chicken & gravy gerber baby food when he is sick. I just give about 1/2 teaspoon at first and then if he keeps that down a give him another 1/2 teaspoon about an hour later. That's what get me thru. Hope that helps and that your baby gets better soon. harley's mom |

| It's so hard when one of the little furry ones are sick. We brought our new puppy home a few weeks ago and our older yorkie got so sick a few days later. She had the runs and vomiting and just not herself. I called the vet and he said give her rice and chicken. Well she wouldn't touch it. Finally the night before I was going to take her into the vet she was very hot so I held her on my lap and rotated an ice pack over her whole body then I fed her some water with a baby spoon and she then would actually eat some of her food from my hand. Then I rememberd the breeder suggested I buy Nutri-cal for the puppy so I thought I would give her some of that. She lapped that stuff up like it was going outa style. I finally put her to bed and knew that in the morning we would be taking the trip to the vet. THANK GOD to my delight when we woke up in the morning she was like her ole self. By the next day her stools were fairly solid and she was eating and drinking and peeing. I think she was stressed out with the new puppy. On an even happier note. Her and her new brother get along so great and I actually thing the new puppy has made her relive her puppy hood.....Life is good........ I hope your little one recovers and is better than ever....Hope this helps. |
