Wellness is a great brand - they have recently undergone a massive expansion and their products will now be sold at Petco. Be wary of your purchases during this expansion as it may mean hiccups in quality control

For more info on the expansion, go here:

I so agree with you, below is a thread that was posted a while back on Wellness that is what I feed my babies now but I will have to switch if Petco is carrying it, I do not trust anything that comes out of petco including their doggie toys, in my second job I happen to do alot of importing/exporting, and you won't believe what the FDA allows to come into this country, the test that have to be conducted on products coming from over seas hardly ever get done, alot of overseas vendors use lead, cadmium and Azo in their products, including bowls, leashes, toys, etc. All of that stuff is bad for our babies, if it isn't an eco-green toy or an organic toy trust me it is probably loaded with lead, to prove my point anyone of you can go to petco right now, purchase a cheap little toy and go get it tested for all of the ingredients named above I guarantee you it is loaded with poisons to our babies!!! If it's in Petco, it's NO GOOD!!! Go to the small mom and pop stores, alot of those stores can't afford to work with big companies that mass produce their products, they have to deal with smaller companies that take their time in producing great products because they aren't over extended on time and they only produce a certain amount of product.

Oh noo that is BAD NEWS, if petco is carrying it then that means it is being mass produced, which means they are no longer taking the time out to make sure the best product go into the food, I will no longer buy it, anything sold out of petco is mass produced and no good for any of our babies. Call me paranoid but thanks for the info if petco is carrying it now my babies will no longer eat it. Just like the solid, it was only being sold in natural food stores and small mom and pop stores because it wasn't mass produced, now you can find solid in almost any pet store, NO GOOD!!!

I really like wellness too, I think if enough wellness buyers complain they might change their minds I mean I would hate to lost customers, especially loyal customers just because one store wants to carry my brand but then again, companies like that never stay around too long they are all looking to expand and once they do that, the care and love they put into their products go out the door once they start seeing the really big bucks then all that matters is money.

I doubt they will change their minds. The rebranding / expansion is well underway and the move is meant to make Wellness competitive with Halo, which is now sold at Petsmart. Or Petco. I can't remember - I don't shop at those chains!!

Anyway, there are some fabulous dry foods available still - the mom and pop dog shop I used to work for has phased out Merrick and Wellness b/c of the company's expansion, however, they are carrying Ziwi Peak which seems very good, Orijen which I love, and California Naturals.

There is a chance that after the hiccups of the expansion are past, Wellness will the same quality. Maybe I am being naive to think that...

Although an expansion can mean a decrease in quality, that is a judgement call made by the company and I don't think that Wellness will go that route. You can be a large manufacturer and still be very strick on quality control. If I did think they were that kind of company I wouldn't feed it even without an expansion. We won't switch unless an issue arises.

Ditto, what she said. I've used Wellness in the past and now with Maggy May for almost 7 months. She's NEVER had any issues with it and I won't switch her from it unless she does or unless the quality of the food goes down.

I agree - both Wellness and Halo have expanded to be sold at Petsmart and Petco. It is in the brand's best interest to maintain quality control because any recalls would now be on a grander scale.

I am very hopeful that the expansion of these brands simply means that more people will have access to high quality dog kibble and more dogs can benefit from Wellness' and Halo's nutrition.

Here is to lots of hope!!

Marci, I know that you have to have dry food for Layla occasionally but have you thought about learning how to dry out your own? People do it with dog treats, so why not food?

Honestly, I don't think any kibble is good. That doesn't mean I'd never feed it but when the CDC says to wash your hands after touching it (and this is not the raw diet), I think something needs to change. Just a thought.

I have to say, I agree. I am a raw feeder and practice stringent hygiene, but with the dry, to have to wash your hands? Weird!

I guess my hope about the Halo/Wellness expansion is that there are pet owners that will never do non-kibble diets. I don't judge - but I am happy that there are more options for kibble feeders to do better then Science Dirt or Pedigree....

Ya Layla tried that a while ago.. at the time it was only available in a fish variety and it gave Lay some horrible gas but i think i'll go back to our local pet store and see what she has in a grain free variety.
