| New puppy-food I have a new 15 week old Yorkie that weighs 1 lb 15 oz. The breeder had her on Bil-Jak which I can't get her to eat. She and my vet stressed to me how important it is that she eat often to avoid hypoglycemic issues. They have me freaked out about this!! I have tried so many different foods, even cooked chicken and she just will eat only a bite or two. I am going to get NutraCal as soon as Petco opens and give her some of that. How do I go about getting her eating? Do I just put out a couple of different foods and FORCE myself to not worry...how long is to long for her to go without eating much?? I just lost my other Yorkie to a tragic accident and am so afraid something will happen to this baby. Can someone give me some help her on how to get her to eat, please. Jenni |

| Hi Welome to YT and i'm sorry to hear about the loss of your last yorkie. If you were to look back at all of the member's posts here, you would find that ALL of us went through this in the beginning, LOL. Yorkies are notoriously fussy eaters. Get the nutrical and give her a little bit a couple of times per day. When my pup wouldn't eat, I had to sit down on the floor and feed him 1 kibble at a time. I also got Natural Balance meat rolls and when I had big problems, I just gave him a few pieces of that; they are so yummy that you will have no problems feeding it. Don't worry, your yorkie will eat, they are just fussy in the beginning. |

| With a young puppy like that I would mix some moist food in with the hard to get her to eat. When Jewels was real little I would give her gerber chicken sticks. I would not worry right now about her eating the hard food just find something she will eat. She is so small and hypoglycemia could be a problem. I have a small girl also and may main priority with her is that she eat.

| Thank you!! I am just so freaked that there will be a sugar issue. I opened a container of Cesar and she did eat about 1/3 of that. Of course she carried each piece off somewhere to eat it! LOL The other day it was Mighty Dog...she liked that and I thought, 'oh good, something she likes"....so much for that. Now she won't touch it. The vet said, put the dry food out, mixed with a bit of canned, leave it for 20 minutes and take it up.....do that three times a day. She'll eat! Then in about the same breath tells me about the dangers of hypoglycemia! Geez..... I appreciate the help and reading all the posts here. This is worse than having a new baby...and I haven't had one of those for 33 years!! Jenni |

| Feeding That New Baby... Quote:
She didn't eat at first at all...not even the canned. So I went and bought the smallest kibble out there...turned out her favorite was Royal Canin puppy. They are tiny triangles..and she eats them well...for now she is still on it and doing well. Keep the nutrical going...offer her some boiled chicken..and keep at it...Let us know how she is doing.

| Jenni, I went through the exact same thing. I tried every food on the market. Maggie even got where she didn't even want human food. I made sure she got her Nutristat twice a day. I was told if you give them too much Nutristat or Nutrical, it ruins their appetite. I turned to YT memeber for help too. I was told to pick ONE good dry food and stick with it. Put it down and walk away. I was told that they WILL NOT STARVE. YT member were right. Make sure she gets her Nutrical until she decides to eat. I too had to face TOUGH LOVE. Broke my heart to see Maggie not eating, but I didn't have a clue what else to try. She too quit eating Bil Jac. I bought her Royal Canin 33 Mini Puppy. She loves it. I started out by hand feeding it to her, while she was sitting on my lap. She does prefer flat plates, versus bowls. So, she now eats her kibbles off of a saucer. I do however give her 1/2 container of Ceasar's Puppy food, sprinkled with some grated cheese for breakfast. Eating Ceasar's for breakfast, seems to get her little system jump started for the day. The rest of the day is dry food only. I'm in the process of mixing 1/2 Royal Canin Puppy with 1/2 Royal Canin Yorkie Adult. I no longer give her ANY human food. A couple of times, her tummy has been upset. When that happens, I give her 1/2 tsp. Pepto Bismol, and she is fine. Good Luck. Trust the member here. She WILL eat when she is hungry.

| Jenni, first I would like to welcome you to YorkieTalk. This is a GREAT site. Congratulations on your new baby, and I am very sorry to hear that your other baby crossed the Rainbow Bridge. Iyou are really stressed about your baby not eating, you are sending that message to little Maggie, so try to relax. I recently went through the same issue with the newest addition to my family 10 month old Peppy who is 2 1/2 lbs. He is not a huge fan of eating, I freaked out started preparing home made food, following guidelines from the vet and online. Well peppy developed BAD diahrreah. Went to the vet and she prescribed Science Diet a/d for dogs and cats. It is a temporary food used to give a nutritional "boost" to sick and/or weakened dogs and cats. Peppy LOVES the food, he gets 1/2 can about 3:30 pm when I get home from work. And the strangest thing happened two days after I started feeding him the SD a/d. He started eating the dry Innova EVO food that I feed the other dogs!!!! Good Luck and keep us posted with any "secrets" you discover. |

| Thanks for the welcome..I apologize for not introducing myself. Blame it on puppy stress!! LOL I got the NutraCal...boy did she turn her nose up at that. Also got some Gerber Chicken sticks....she ate 1 1/2 of those!! Doesn't care much for the Natures Choice Beef Roll thing....what a brat I have. At least she has eaten some. The gal at the pet store recommended I try the Chicken Soup for the Pup or whatever its called.....havent' opened that yet. Pet Food Express has a great return policy!!!!! Actually I can't believe it..she said if I buy a bag of food and she won't eat it I can return it no questions asked. She said even if there is 3 kibbles left!!!!! I hate buying a 8 or 10 lb bag only to have it go to waste! I'm not worried about her starving to death or anything, but I do worry about the sugar issue. The breeder said to mix a tsp of Karo syrup in her water. Is that a good idea?? What little bit she has eaten has not bothered her stomach at all. All these different things she has taken a bite or two of. Probably not enough to really do anything. If anything she is constipated...how do I fix that?? Boy I'm just a wealth of questions aren't I??? LOL I do so appreciate all the help tho....I do not want to end up with a picky eating dog!! |

| Jenni, I am glad you got your little one to eat something, but watch out for human baby foods, they contain onions which are doggie NoNo's. |

| Ive given them to my pups and it was recommended by a breeder. I read the jar and it says it has onion powder in it. Maybe you should avoid those sorry.

| food with onions Just what does the onions do to them anyway? In the chicken sticks it is about the last ingredient. Anyone know a site to read up on this? |

| I an really not sure. There has been alot on this site about onions. I will still give the chicken sticks to my dogs as a snack. I have many times before without any problems. I think the onion powder in them is a small amount.
