| First Heat Sidney is 7 months old and she is going through her first heat. She is acting a little different than her normal self. She is by no means acting lathargic but she is a little less active than normal. Could it just be like women, that they do feel a little more down than normal becuase of cramps, moodiness, or whatever else? I am intending to get her spayed becuase I am not breeding her but I was just wondering of this is normal for heats, especially the first heat. Anyone with advice or experience with this any feedback is very appreciated! Thanks! |

| Bella is going through her first heat right now too, I'm not breeding her either but waiting till after the 1st heat for her to be spayed. She is acting different but in a different way. Her mood is more snippy then usual, she is always a diva but she is being more possesive of me. If one of the other dogs situates themselves between me and her she goes nutso on them. I do think that it should be expected to have some difference in personality, their hormones are spastic right now.

Once there is a heat they are 90% more likely to have uterine and or breast cancer later in life. It is just not healthy for them if they are not show dogs, or meant for breeding. My little Cricket was a show dog and I knew she would never be large enough to carry a littler. Show dogs are not allowed to be "surgically altered" I spayed her at a very young age anyway and I (admittedly did a wrong thing) showed her anyhow. I know it was wrong, but we were only showing for the fun of it, not for seriousness, and I do not believe it hurt anything to have her spayed. ALTHOUGH I WOULD NOT EVER DO THAT AGAIN. I did it to protect her from potential physical problems in the future. As soon as the heat is over, please get them spayed asap. It does give them cramps just like we get, they feel out of sorts and "yucchy" for a while. JMHO... Sue & Cricket | |
