| Giving Bones as Chew Treats? I finally got brave enough to give my girl a real bone--she loved it, of course! But now I have questions before I continue. I gave her a marrow bone that the butcher sliced into about 1 inch thick piece, and I dug all the marrow out and gave just the bone to her. Do I need to freeze the bone first like I've read that you need to for raw meat? How long do I let her chew? I threw it away when she was done--about 2 hours, but could I have rinsed it and refridgerated it for another chew session? (I wouldn't reuse more than twice). How many times a week do you give bones-I am interested in keeping her teeth clean, mainly. Are marrow bones okay to keep giving, they are all I was able to find around me, and in only one store would the butcher cut it down to Yorkie size for me, so if marrow bones aren't good, I am out of luck! |

Yes, meat and marrow bones are wonderful treats and helps to clean their teeth. I do it all the time, leave a bit of meat on it to entice the chew . I give fresh pork rib bones, beef marrow bones, and lamb shanks they absolutely love it and I have some real quiet boys for a few hours then afterwards they sleep, too tired to do anything else LOL Yes, freeze it, I do this and it keeps them busy for a long time. DO NOT REMOVE THE MARROW you are taking away the goodies from them You can reuse the bones, I do this and frefreeze it. Also, I get big bones to keep them really occupied. The size of bones I get are for big dogs and it sure as heck keep these little boys occupied. No need to cut it down to size, she or he can handle it. I give meat bones wiht marrow the size of a saucer Last edited by soccbydo; 02-10-2008 at 03:02 AM. | |

| Welcome to YT, Tinypaws! Personally I don't give real bones, as I worry about the choking hazard-Emma is a power chewer, and if she thinks we or Milli is going to take something away, she'll put the whole thing in her mouth. It was chewing on bones and chew bones that she started this behavior with-so now we give them only nylabones and kongs to chew on. With that said, I know there are many YT'ers that do give real bones to their dogs. I'm not sure about having the butcher cut the bone into a 1" piece-that seems a bit small to me. I home prepare food, and feed raw meat, and I freeze the meat for at least 48 hours before feeding it. This helps remove most of the bacteria that could be in the meat. The same rule would apply to bones-so make sure you're freezing them first. My two like their food just a little bit frozen, kind of slushy-it's a new texture, so try it with the bones and see how your dog does with it. If she doesn't like it as much, thaw it out completely before feeding it. You could also fill the center of the bone with peanut butter, cottage cheese, or bits of cheddar cheese before feeding it for something new and tasty.

| I'd never feed real bones due to the choking hazzards, but if you seem to be doing well with it then who am i to stop you. If it does however become a pain to go through all of that and you get tired of scrapping marrow and freezing then the simple solution is bullysticks. the kids love them and they are great for teeth with no hazzards of regular bones. http://app.infopia.com/Shop/Control/...35246237240247 |
