Yorkie Yakker | Blood tests for new Yorkie I hope you can help. I just got a new Yorkie. She is 4-1/2 lbs and is 13 months old. What blood tests should I be asking the VET to do to make sure she is healthy. I know you have to ask the Vets for certain tests, otherwise they don't automatically do it and I don't know what to ask for. Thanks, Edie |

| I don't know what tests you need to ask for, but I'm sure someone will. Good luck.

| Some Yorkie owners feel that all Yorkies should be tested for liver shunt. This is done through bile acid testing (two blood tests before and after eating). If you ask for this tests the vet may thinks it's crazy with no symptoms, so it's your call. Other than that you could just ask for the blood test they do before they put animals under anesthesia. This should include a CBC and organ screen. Sorry I don't have the exact name. '

| I would definitely ask for a bile acid test.

| Definitely get a bile acids test done. Dr. Center from Cornell recommends that you get a bile acids test done before you even bring a puppy from a "highly affected breed" home from the breeder. Yorkies are listed first on her list of highly affected breeds. I belong to a Maltese forum and more and more people are getting smart enough to insist that this is done before they bring their puppy home if their breeder isn't already routinely doing it. It can save you thousands of dollars and a lot of heartbreak to get this inexpensive test done then. I know your dog is an adult, but it is still important to get the test done asap since liver disease is such a problem in this breed. |
