Grooming advice needed! Choco has turned 20 weeks and he has been fully vaccinated with 3 sets of distemper shots and rabies. I am planning on taking him to the groomer in the first week of February for his first grooming appointment. I have searched for a groomer with the best reviews in Boston on Yelp, so hopefully she will do a careful job. I have done simple cuts and nail clipping by myself, but I need some professional help on cleaning his face and hair on ears and possibly anal gland expression. Since it's the first time taking him to the grooming salon, I would like to learn about anything that I should ask my groomer to pay attention to. Also, I'm going to get him puppy-cut, and I would appreciate if you could share some photos of cute puppy cuts on Yorkies. Thank you!

Sorry I can't help here but I'll gladly bump this in case someone has advice for you. I personally groom my 2 and they have never been to a professional. I've attached photos of them below for you to view

OMG! They are so beautiful and well-groomed! How dow you keep their faces so clean? I'm also afraid that I may cut the nails too short and draw blood...

I get the goop out of their eyes and redo their topknots daily or every other day. They are brushed frequently so it's a commitment on my part. As for the nails, Daisy's (maltese) is easy since it's clear but for Tessa (yorkie) I clip along the curve of her nails. It takes some practice and diligence. You may want to invest in some quality grooming tools as well. As for anal expression, I wouldn't mess with it unless his stool is consistently soft or you've witnessed him scooting his rump across the floor. lol.

Thank you for your advice! What's the best way to get the goop out of the eyes? Once it gets tangled along the hair, it's so hard to get them out!

I use a wet q-tip to clean away the wet goop. For dry crusty, I make sure to moisten the area around their eyes with warm water and gently comb it out. It helps to do this every other day if not daily. Don't allow for their boogies to dry and heavily crust on their eyes. It makes it difficult to remove it and maybe even painful for them if not done with caution and care. Hope this helps & good luck to you.

As for going the the groomer......I would go there ahead of time and check the place out. Is she going to make you leave your dog there for hours at a time or can you pick him up after an hour or two? Will she let you stay in the building? Will she let you speak to people who are her customers? Make sure your dog isn't acting fearful when you pick him up and that he has no razor burn or blow drier burn. A wet cloth or cotton swab on the face works well for a quick clean off without a bath. The best thing is to comb your pet everyday. If you do a quick comb through daily it is quick and easy for both of you and your pup will get used to being handled and groomed and won't be stressed like dogs that are not groomed frequently. Combing even though they don't really need it helps train them and it makes the experience less stressful. They sell a 4" metal comb called a moustache comb that works great for the little one's face.
