| matted hair question my p-nut went to the groomer yesterday and he was matted up pretty bad since he had just recently gotten neutered and the cone did a number on the hair around his neck. anyway, she got most of it out, but said that he was freaking out anytime she even picked up the brush. i'm nervous now that he's going to be a handful anytime i or the groomer brush him. anybody else have this problem or any ideas of how to get him to not be afraid of the brush? thanks! |

| Both of mine were afraid of the brush in the beginning. I just kept showing it to them, letting them check it out and sniff it, and I would brush them gently to let them see I wasn't trying to hurt them. They eventually got used to it. I also massage them before I start brushing them to get them relaxed. Then, I continue to massage them as I'm brushing. Brush him gently and slowly, even a little bit at a time. He will get used to it. You can also try treats so that he associates it with something good.

| PS - You can also try a good detangler on the mats to make brushing them out a little easier.

| Petting and massaging while brushing is helpful for my Ruff. He also gets a treat at the end. I second letting them sniff the brush- we have to respect our little ones like people- they want to know what we are going to do to them! At first keep the sessions short and keep the stress low by not working too much on any tangle or mat all at once. Talking in a soothing way can be helpful, too, just make sure you do not reinforce their fear by letting your voice tell them it's ok to be afraid. Soothing but firm. (I learned that from clipping nails). I use a detangler off the pet store shelf, but I'm on the lookout for a more natural product. In any case the one I have now does work for deodorizing, static control, and keeping the coat smoother with less tangles. I've heard some handlers use PlushPuppy, which I'd like to try. | I agree, the massaging, petting, smelling, ect while brushing worked for me. I had the worst time getting Samson and Zeke used to the clipper! I did the same thing, let them smell it, look at it, and would turn it on and use it whether needed or not at each grooming. The brushing, they now Love! And get upset if I don't sit down and do it daily. The clipper they tolerate! Just keep working with him, it will get better. Sounds like he had a rather rough time with all the mats at the groomers. Hopefully the groomer will be extra patient as well.

| well he's getting better. luckily our groomer is super sweet and said that she was really calm with him and took breaks so that he wouldn't stress out too much. i've been working with him at home and he seems to be getting much better (even though sometimes he thinks he's allowed to eat the handle of the brush, haha). i havent had a chance to look for a detangler yet because of my work schedule, but i'm definitely going to. thanks for all your help! |
