I agree, the massaging, petting, smelling, ect while brushing worked for me. I had the worst time getting Samson and Zeke used to the clipper! I did the same thing, let them smell it, look at it, and would turn it on and use it whether needed or not at each grooming. The brushing, they now Love! And get upset if I don't sit down and do it daily. The clipper they tolerate! Just keep working with him, it will get better. Sounds like he had a rather rough time with all the mats at the groomers. Hopefully the groomer will be extra patient as well.
