Default What am I doing wrong?

So I'm crate training Hiro now. I have been doing so for 24 days.
I got a book and did some reading/research.
Hiro is 7 months old. I don't work and am at home with him all day.

The crate is just big enough for him to turn in and lay down. I have a fleece blanket, a couple safe toys and something to chew on in there. I clean it out regularly with pet deodorant spray, etc. He loves his crate and goes in willingly. Sometimes he doesn't even want to come out. lol

I have us on a strict schedule.

Noon -- Get up, take Hiro out - he'll pee and maybe poo.
12:15 -- Feed him outside his crate. I am in the kitchen the whole time.
12:30 -- Out again - he will poo and pee.
12:30 to 1:30 -- He gets to run around free in the kitchen.
1:30 -- Walk after hubby leaves for work.
2:00 to 5:30 -- Into the crate for the afternoon.
5:30 -- Out for a pee.
5:30 to 8:30 -- Into the crate.
8:30 -- Out for a pee then Hiro gets supper.
9:00 -- Outside again for a pee and a poo.
9:00 to 10:00 -- Playtime in the kitchen until the hubby gets home from work.
10:00 to 1:00am -- Into the crate.
1:00 am -- Out for a pee.
1:00am to 4:00am -- Into the crate.
4:00 am -- Out for the last pee and poo of the night.

While in the carrier Hiro doesn't typically fuss and sleeps soundly all night in it.

So... into the issue at hand.

Now tonight immediately after he was finished supper, and I was doing dishes, Hiro (without a sign or sound that I noticed) peed on the kitchen floor. I scooped him up and took him outside to go pee while I wiped up the kitchen.

When I take him outside to pee and poo I praise him WHILE he is doing the deed. I hadn't been doing that before, but quickly remedied that situation. I was also giving him a treat when he went, but I stopped when I read that sometimes they just want the treat and don't pee. lol

So.. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, if I AM doing anything wrong, or if it was just a lapse. He typically won't EVER pee or poo in the middle of the night or make *any* noise whatsoever after the hubby and I have gone to bed. This leads me to believe that he can hold it sufficiently. Should I not worry about this little slip or should I be trying a different technique?

Guess I just need a little advice/guidance or some encouragement that I'm doing it right if I am!

Sounds like a good plan to me. They do have laps once in a while.

I do give treats when potty training....I also have a praise party outside. The neighbors think I'm a crazy lady. I did this every time till just a few weeks ago.

Myah will be 1 year old on the 2 of December and is 99.9% trained. I still give her and my 4 year old Bichon treats from time to time when they come in from going outside.

I think you and Hiro are doing fine...keep up the good training!!!

THE most important thing- praise- if he has no motivation to go outside- he'll go wheereve. Every pee and poop outside- treats and BIG party- lots of love- Layla is 2.5 and she still gets a treat after every poop.

Also- use a bell on the door- every time you go out- you ring the bell- then start using his nose to ring the bell and BIG Praise and then he will start rining the bell- Layla does every time!

HAHA I totally did this before! I started jumping up and down and clapping and all that! He's so laid back that I don't do it so much anymore - I think HE thinks I'm crazy too!!

I think I'll start back up on the treats. (I taught him to sit in like two 15 minute sessions with a certain treat he goes ga-ga over) So maybe a little chunk of boiled chicken breast for when he goes potty only!

Thanks for the encouragement! I appreciate it!

I REALLY thought about trying this! It can't hurt at all in conjunction with me taking him out anyway! I think I'll give it ago. Thanks!!

Great job!

Sounds like Hiro is doing awesome. They do sometimes have their accidents. Maximus is 1 year 6 months and 99.9% potty trained. His accidents are about 4 or more months apart when they do happen. It's rare but he just had one about 2 months ago, and it was a little accident. He knew it was bad too. He went and stood in the corner and I asked him what was wrong. I came over and saw this little puddle. He told on himself...lol. He's such a good boy!

Thanks, Verna!

My hubby loves that you named your cutie Maximus! That's awesome!

Ok, at least I know to look forward to the odd accident and not think that I'm a total failure!

I am 100% dedicated to training Hiro and making him the bestest little puppy I can make him! Aaaaaaaaaand I'm still an overprotective first time mommy.

So...between 4am and 12pm he is in his crate too? Cause' according to your schedule he is in there for 12.5 hours allready. Then add 8 hours at night, that is 20.5 hours leaving him 3.5 hours out of his crate? I suppose if he really does enjoy being in there it is not a huge deal...but it seems a bit much imo. Maybe he is having accidents outside his crate because he is not getting enough time in the house to learn not to go in the house. Plus, if you are always instructing him when to go and leading him, he isn't getting the chance to let you know he has to go out. I don't know if what I am saying helps. I wish you luck with training. I think that one accident is nothing to worry about.

Thank you! We named him after the Gladiator...lol

He sounds like he's on the right track and has a great mommy! Maximus was crate trained as well.

Default Ok, so what now?

Ok, so I'm not exactally sure where to go from here.

In the last couple weeks Hiro has had some accidents.
I've been letting him run around the house at the request of my husband who thinks he spends too much time in his carrier. Although his time spent in the carrier is much less than what it was, I still don't trust him. Aaaaaaaand for good reason. I have a belly band on him when he has his good boy freedom and he's been really good at not peeing in the house. Well tonight he wet his belly band.

I've had him running around the house - keeping a decent eye on him (but not like a hawk) - for a couple hours in the morning, after puppy supper and in the evening. Otherwise he is in the carrier. I've even been testing him a little by taking him out of his carrier, getting him all riled up and then putting him back into his crate. Usually he will have to pee after such an exciting play session and I usually take him out, but lately I've been seeing if he can hold it. And he does. Just fine; but he's in his carrier. He holds it all night too. 8 full hours. (Sometimes longer if he doesnt wake me.) Usually he will wake me up with his barking and whimpering and whining. Good alarm clock! lol Oh, and he is allowed free run of the kitchen overnight, he's not in his carrier.

Anyway, I guess he has no idea how to tell me he has to go out apparently. I've tried bells but he chews on them and plays with them thereby destroying them. He's not a very vocal pup and wasn't doing anything that might tip me off that he would need to go outside. No scratching on the door or anything. So what should I do? Hints, tips, tricks?

Thanks in advance!
