| Gizmo ate rat poison (rat bait) First, he's going to be fine. We just got back from the emergency vet. Apparently, there was an open box of D-Con rat bait behind my son's entertainment system. I didn't even know it was there, and it was put there so long ago that my son and husband forgot about it. We have no idea how he even got to it, but he did. Please, never underestimate what these little guys can get into. We saw him with it scattered on the floor and immediately took him to the emergency vet. We left so quickly, I don't think I even logged off YT! In the past three hours, I have learned everything about rat bait I never wanted to know. How it works is that it prevents the blood from clotting, so the "rat" slowly bleeds to death. Since we got him there so quickly (within 30 minutes) they decided to first induce vomiting. This was done with a medicine in some eye drops. They said that he threw up three good piles of the bait, so he had ingested quite a bit before we discovered him. (And we wondered if he had even eaten any.) Then, they washed the drops out of his eye, and the vomiting stopped Then, they fed him activated charcoal to absorb any more they could. Then, he was given a vitamin K injection (to help his blood clot) and we have vitamin K chewable tablets to give him once a day for the next two weeks. We will contact our regular vet tomorrow to make a follow up appt. and take him a copy of the medical record. We need to watch him carefully for the next several days for any little red spots inside his ears or on his belly. The vet said that might be a sign of a bleeding issue. We also need to monitor him for any respiratory issues. Whew...this was terrifying. Please check your houses for this stuff! Personally, I'd rather have rats. Ironically, as we were rushing into the clinic, someone else was coming out with three yorkies who had ALSO just been treated for rat bait poisoning! The vet told us that he's seen a lot of cases recently for some reason. Luckily, the vet didn't think that there would be any serious long-term consequences. We're just praying that's true.

| Thank you, I'm still amazed that he was able to get to it. I really hope other people check for this in their houses as a result of our experience. Kisses back to Lulu from Gizmo.

| How frightening! What a relief that your baby seems to be OK. I swear these dogs do not have taste buds. They will eat anything, except what is good for them!

| I wondered about that too, but the vet says that it's flavored to attract rats, so other animals will also be attracted to it. And you're right, he wouldn't eat his regular food today because he's been having a bad teething day. Go figure!

| I feel more guilty that I didn't puppy-proof well enough and/or that I didn't watch him closely enough. I agree though that the quick trip to the vet did save his life. Thank you.

I have to do my lesson plans now, so I will be offline for awhile. Thanks guys, and I'll keep you updated, but I think he's fine. Now I just worry about long-term effects. You would think it has to hurt his kidney or liver wouldn't you? I will talk to his regular vet about that tomorrow. Thanks again. Judy, John, Chris and Gizmo
