| Worms?!!? Could it be?! Ok, so I posted about Percys butt scooting, and really thought it was his anal glands, I expressed them at home after all (wasn't that bad, really) and the scooting stopped, so I thought we were ok. But, yesterday, while we were away, the scooting started again. I honestly forgot to check him poop before I threw it away, so I checked it today. OMG! Both times today, there were little "rice" looking thingies in it. They weren't moving, but Percy doesn't eat rice! There are also little empty casing type things around his butt. (Maybe dead worms??) I don't understand how he would have gotten worms, he is UPT on every shot known to man, get heartworm every month, and Advantage for fleas.... If he did have worms, wouldn't the little rice looking things be moving? Also, he stool is normal, not diarrhea, if it was worms wouldn't that be the case as well? Anyone know anything about this? Can I wait until tomorrow to call the vet? Or should I get to ER care? He is acting normal otherwise.

| Well, sounds like it could be worms. My mom has her dog on heartguard plus and it is suppose to prevent heartwarms and also lists "hookworms." Well, she has hookworms and is being given meds. So if I saw white rice looking pieces of something in the stool, it may be "pieces" of a larger worm that is being passed. I would try to save the next stool sample in a airtight bag and take her to the vet tomorrow. JMO

| Yep, sounds like worms. You can wait to go to your vet - you don't need to go to th ER. They can pick worms up almost anywhere... |

Sounds like tapeworms. This is one worm that Heartworm meds are not effective in getting rid of.

| That would explain a lot if it was a tapeworm. My next post was going to be able percy being soooo thin. He eats. I know he eats. Yet, honestly, he looks underfed. You can feel his whole spine. Its embarrassing. makes me feel like a bad furmama. Can't wait for the vet to open.

The problem with tapeworms is that it can cause anemia.....don't be surprised when he starts gaining weight. The worm is obtained by ingesting fleas....it only takes one.

| Stella had tapeworms several weeks ago, I took a specimen into the vets and they gave me Drontal Plus, they were gone in a couple days. Mardelin was right about the flea thing, he said she had injested a flea. I don't know how because her little paws hadn't touched the outside at that time because of kennel cough and he told me one of us could have easily brought it in on our clothes. |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | i second what mardelin said. those are most likely tape worms and can be cleared up by Drontal from your vet. be sure to take a poop sample with you when you go

| Dried brown rice will appear on your bedding, etc. Do a search and it sounds like a tapeworm. Requires special medication to get rid of the creepy thing. Wash all of your pup's beddings and surrounding items. PS It will be ugly when it finally passes, so be prepared. You should always check your pup's bum for those critters. Ugh! Sorry.
