Omg Starsky had a maggot in him! Gross!

Starsky had this bug bite on him which I thought was a mosquito bite that was getting infected. I watched it for a week because it had a head on it and I thought it was going to heal. Well it was getting worse and since I had to work today, I had my husband take him to the vet. The vet took the head off of the bump and squeezed some stuff out. She said the hole wasn't big enough to get the wormy thing out. So she took Starsky in the back and gave him a local and cut it out. She came back and asked my husband if he wanted to see it and he said yes. It was a white maggot with a black head. GROSS! I was glad he took him and not me. I guess the vet said they usually see this about 2 times a year and this year they have seen it 6 or 7 times. Flies can lay eggs on our little guys, so watch it.

Has anyone else ever heard of this happening?

Starsky is okay now. Just have to put neosporin on it.

I have never heard of such a thing....But this is why I'm glad I'm part of YT, cause this is how we find out things..from other members. I think I would have reacted the same way you did. Glad your hubby took him, they have a stronger tummy than us...lol

That same thing has happened to a couple of dogs on here. I would be so grossed out if that happened to my dogs. Good thing your Husband was there.

Wow....this is the 3rd yorkie with this in a month ? I've seen it on Animal planet and I guess this can happen very easily...and judging by what the vet said - this must be really happening more often - I wonder why ?

good thing you took him into the vet - can you imagine doing that yourself ? oooowwweeee !!! I'd freak but then again - We'd do anything for our yorkies wouldn't we ?

I hope he heals up quick - did the vet tell you how to prevent this ?

It must have something to do with the warm weather we've all been having... (more bugs around??) I've read quite a few maggot stories here on YT....

Glad everything "came out" OK!!

I think the way to prevent it would be to check your dog for any open sores because that is what the fly lays the egg in. With Maddie, I think it was the site where she had the tick and it left an open sore. If they do have any open sores, treat them by cleaning with hydrogine peroxide and then neosporin so they heal up quickly. Also, keep them away from flies if they do happen to have a sore on them. It all starts out with a sore from a bug bite or something else, so if they have no sores on them, they shouldn't be affected!

Connie, I don't think Starsky had any sores on his body. The vet said that the larva can burrough its way into the skin without a sore. We were at a yorkie playdate and there were a ton of flies. I didn't think much of them except they were a nuisance when we were eating. I am thinking that is when one of them laid and egg on Starsky. I don't have hardly any flies at my house and they were everywhere up north! It is hot and humid here for Colorado. Ususally don't get this much humidity but lately we've had some rain storms. Oh I itch just talking about this. Starsky is fine, still has a little bump there but I am watching it. (infection probably needs to drain still) Thanks guys for all your concerns and keep checking your babies for bumps! Until the cold air arrives!
