Angry Kennel Cough

My 9-week old Morkie has kennel cough. The ER gave her an IV and cough suppresant and antibiotic last night, but she is worse today. Her cough sounds so deep down that she can hardly get it out. Has anyone dealt with kennel cough? How long did it last? How dangerous is it for babies? Thanks for any help you can give me.

Poor baby....Neither of mine have had it but I heard it can take quite a while to completely go away....just keep a close eye on her and make sure she drinks plenty of liquids...IF you start seeing any change in her cough or behavior I would call the vet asap....When they're this young it can be hard on their little systems...

I wish you all the best and hope she feels better.

Cali had it when I got here and gave it tp my 9 year old pom. After many rounds of antibiotics and 3 months it went away. I thought they would never get over it.
The antibiotics do take time to work but keep a close eye on her if she seems worse call the vet. Good luck

Please keep a good eye on her. Princess had kennel cough when we got her and it just got worse. She was on 2 different antibiotics and none seemed to help. As it got worse, it turned into pneumonia. She was in the hospital for over 2 weeks. Very expensive and very emotional. I am not trying to freak you out, but please watch her. Maybe even have the vet do a chest x-ray to make sure her lungs are not bad. I will definitely pray for you and please keep us updated.

So sorry you're going through this...Buddy's just getting over it. It got worse b4 it started getting better - took about 4 days on antibiotics. As mentioned, pneumonia is the thing to watch out for. Also, hypoglycemia if not eating well - (we supplemented with NutriCal). Try to keep her warm and quiet so her body can heal. The vet said there are different strains and some are quite resistant. We were fortunate Buddy's kc responded to Zithromax (but needed 2 rounds). The vet's take on cough suppressants was not to use too much; she felt a productive cough helped keep things from settling into the lungs. I'm a newbie, but if I knew then what I know now, I'd probably have used it on the worst days/nighttime. Anyway, I do hope your little one gets better quickly - it's so stressful

Sad Hope your baby gets better!

Chloe' my yorkie came home with Kennel cough and it went away within two weeks....Chloe' now has all of her shots and hasn't come down with any more of it but I just brought a 3 month old Maltese into the house Kylie and she has the most awful wet congestive cough I've ever heard. I'm taking her to the vet after work today and have already been but the antibiotics are just not helping...the vaccine only covers about 25 of the 125 strands...it usually takes 5 to 7 days to incubate...then you know it's hit...I took Kylie and the vet said she maybe maybe had kennel cough (I watch them like a hawk) and knew I was right...but about 3 days later it was an awful cough. Now I'm just hoping it hasn't grown out of control...bless their little pea hearts. They are so little and sometimes it can be so rough on em'. Keep him warm and away from other pups and I have been putting Kylie in the bathroom with a steamy shower to loosen things up a bit so maybe that will help...your vet might put her on a cough suppressant pill as well as liquid antibiotics.

I am not sure where you got your Yorkie from but buying one before 3 months of age is not a good thing and even worse if it comes down with kennel cough. Now if you bred this yorkie then look out everyone in your house dog wise that is will get it. If you want help to keep your Yorkie alive feel free to contact me for more info. There are a couple more things that cn be done to insure it doesn't turn into upper resportory.

Good luck and hope Morkie makes it!

Default Thanks

Thank you for your advice. I called the breeders and they took Mickey back to their house to nurse him to health. They are nebulizing him, using antibiotics, and coaxing him to eat and drink, and staying in contact with their vet. They e mail me every night with an update, and Mickey is improving. I hope to bring him back home this weekend!

Sounds like the breader has really been stepping up to the plate to care for this little guy! You a very lucky! Some of them wouldn't help at all! I will say a prayer that he makes a swift recovery! And I hope that he gets to come to you soon! God bless him, and you for making sure he gets the best care!

This is a good thing! Kennel cough in a young puppy is very dangerous. And nebulizing is the best way to pull them out of it. As well as antibiotics in the machine they are using. But still letting one go before 12 weeks of age is just not what breeder's should be doing!!!! IMO
I wish your little one a speedy recovery, you might be looking at a couple of weeks.... Maybe more.

Default My Nine Week Has It To

I am so mad. I bought this cute pup at a pet store. They were treating this 9 wk old pup for 2 different med. MY vet said he didnt know what it was for. I went bk to the store they said their vet give theses pup this med one for the change from mother milk to pup food and the other for upper repirtory. The pup is doing better but now my 4 yr old yorkie has it.This pet store lied about the size of this pup said will be only 7 pds when its 9 wks and 4.4 pds said they bought this place and old owner had a bad rep for selling sick puppies. I found out it is the same guy just changed names of the place. is there any thing I can do stop this from any one else going thru this?

Winston had kennel cough when I got him. I was so terribly worried. I took him to the vet at least once a week thinking he was going to die. But, everything turned out fine! It did take several weeks to get over though. That pitiful cough made me feel so awful for him. He is totally fine now. No problems and has never been sick. Just make sure it does NOT turn into pneumonia...that is when the problems start. I felt like I actually rescued Winston. Im sure your pup will be fine too!
