| urethrostomy Our Yorkie has issues with bladder stones. Has anyone had this surgery performed on their dog? Ours is 7 and in great health other than this. They are compacted and it looks like this may be our only option. I’m wondering what the pros and cons of it are. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | What have you decided? If this is your only option, it sounds like you're headed in the correct direction. Please update when you can.

| Here is a good article for potential urethrostomy patients. Warning: there is a photo of an incision site that might make people uncomfortable. Urethrostomy in dogs Here is a link to a technical article about the procedure that is probably behind a paywall for most people. If you have the procedure done, I can copy and paste the section about post-surgical care. Urethrotomy and urethrostomy in the dog - ScienceDirect |

We have decided to use our local vet and have the surgery done. He did tell us there is no hurry. As long as he is peeing fine and not in pain than we should wait. He just performed this on a dog that was diagnosed 2 years ago. | |

| Thank you for the information. It was informative. It has been a hard choice but putting him down is not an option for us. We have decided to take him to our local vet who has done many of these surgeries. He did state that we have time and there is no rush unless he begins to have issues such as pain, etc. |

| Thanks Thank you for all the advice and support. We have switched his food per our local vet and he has improved tremendously. He still has them but is in no pain. We can prolong the surgery indefinitely. |

| I have a foster who had this surgery. It was a wonderful option for him. We used a specialist. He had bladder stones 3 times prior to the surgery ...none since.

| Wow.. that’s great to know. Makes me feel we are making the right decision to have it done. Did the dog have any permanent incontinence problems after? |

| Great! Thank you for sharing. It’s so hard to make those decisions and hope they are the right ones. |

The one caution is that I personally would not have a general vet do this surgery. It is a case for a soft tissue specialist in my opinion and I would only do a board certified surgeon. You could call and get pricing just so you know. Many places will give a ball park figure over the phone. You can find a specialist here: www.acvs.org Yes, it is hard to make these decisions. When it was first suggested, I was a bit horrified. Even after the surgery I was uncomfortable with it; but, now I wouldn't think twice about it if I had a pup who was a stone former.

| I have quite a few posts on YT about things like this that I run across. I just looked and sure enough, there is a thread about Timmy. Here is a link to it: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...throstomy.html
