For a dog with repeated stones, it is a great option. You can't just keep removing stones from a bladder forever. It is very common for dogs who form calcium oxylate stones to just keep forming them.
The one caution is that I personally would not have a general vet do this surgery. It is a case for a soft tissue specialist in my opinion and I would only do a board certified surgeon. Yes, it is hard to make these decisions. When it was first suggested, I was a bit horrified. Even after the surgery I was uncomfortable with it; but, now I wouldn't think twice about it if I had a pup who was a stone former.
