| Need help I have a four year old female that has had diarrhea going on four weeks now. All fecal test are good. Been to the vet three times. Been on antibiotics for three weeks. Have changed diet twice . They suspect irritable bowel disease. Does anyone out there know if this can be controlled ? Or anything that helps . And is this fatal ? Really need some advise . Thanks Jerry |

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | I think Ladyjane has a pup with IBS. If you send her a PM I am sure she can answer your questions.

| What foods have you tried? I have a pup who had surgery for liver shunt this past year and they suspect he has IBD. Instead of scoping him since he had been through so much at the time, the specialist suggested giving him Pepcid twice/day and put him on Hill's Ultra Z/D. As long as he is on that food he does well. Sometimes if he manages to get a treat or some food from one of my other pups, I notice he gets a bit out of kilter. If you can afford scoping with a specialist, it would really be best; but if not, I would suggest at least going to one for a consult. You are close to LSU...I am sure they could help...BUT you also have a local place that our foster homes in BR use. I could look into that place for you.

| I give 1/4 tab of the 10mg tablet. ... but you really should ask your vet first. I am sure you could just call. The reason for the Pepcid for mine is that there is also a thought of gastritis. Your pup may not benefit from it. Sounds like it is more diarrhea that is an issue. Has blood work been done?

| Here is a great link about IBD. There are other YT members who have more experience than I do...I am sure they will be around to help you. I do have another pup with it but she also has lymphangectasia. I did a consult with a vet nutritionist for her and she is on a home cooked diet. She was diagnosed in Dec. 2011 and has done very well on her diet. Inflammatory Bowel Disease

| No, this is generally not fatal. The most thorough diagnostic test would be a full thickness intestinal biopsy. A lot of times this is replaced with biopsy by endoscopy. It isn't quite as good for getting good samples, but is much easier on the pup. This would rule out anything fatal. I'm not sure you need to go that far yet. Has your vet mentioned what the next step is? Pepcid shouldn't hurt, but if this is diarrhea I don't think it is going to do much. What antibiotic was used? Did the vet consider using it longer term if it worked at all? Exactly which foods have you tried? If this started four weeks ago and she has already been on two new foods that could be a problem. Ideally (unless they do absolutely terrible when trying a new rx food) you need to use an intestinal food for 3 weeks to judge its worth. What lab work has been done? Any vomiting? Sometimes IBD can be controlled with food if it is not related to an underlying issue. My Yorkie has it. I was about to have her scoped, but she ended up doing better every time I thought about it. Then we found the correct food for her. If your vet does send you to LSU I wouldn't hesitate to go (although that may not be necessary). I've talked to one of the vets there (about their vet school, not my dog) and I would definitely let him see my pup if he is seeing patients. You can PM me for his name if you want. No treats or edible chews until this is resolved..
