YT Addict | Jenna vomited white slimy foam this a.m. She woke me coughing. I thought maybe she'd gotten a hair caught in her throat or was having a reverse sneezing episode but she very quickly went to retching. At first it was just dry heaves but then she began bringing up the foam and this continued for about 15 minutes to a total of 30 or more all told. She'd heave, suck it back down (ew) and quiet for a moment or two and then go again. I gave her some Nutrical because I remember she hadn't eaten much yesterday until late in the day and then she spent much of the evening and past bedtime pounding down dry food. She also drank quite a bit of water before bed. Still she kept vomiting after the Nutrical so I opened a can of her moist and put little bits on my fingers to get her to eat. She had about a tablespoon and wouldn't take more. I cradled her and walked her and spoke softly to calm her (she has bad anxiety) and she finally seemed better. This started about 11 this morning and now it was almost noon. Her gums were a little lighter pink than usual before the Nutrical. So I'm wondering if her tummy was just empty too long or did she have some kind of low blood sugar episode? We've had a new puppy in the house for the last two months and I have to take the 'day shift' walking, feeding and taking care of her...this has thrown my schedule with Jenna into chaos. (The new pup, which is supposed to be my daughter's but I reckon the hubby picked her up more for himself, is a husky/dachsund/pomeranian cross with too much energy for Jenna's tastes and makes her very nervous, but she's been coping pretty well with it considering everything.) We're still battling this atopy/skin/fur loss problem...no scratching unless she eats something that irritates her or doesn't get her baths on time, but her fur is all but gone on her belly and neck. I fear she'll be bald in a few more months, poor thing. But it doesn't seem to be bothering her. Her remaining coat is going from borderline silky to cottony...no idea why. Anyway I think we averted a big problem this morning, but I am wondering how to keep her tummy full without her becoming an all day grazer or overweight. How likely is this a blood sugar problem like hypoglycemia or diabetes? Could it just be stomach acid causing this? Perhaps she should drink more? It is very dry and deeply cold (forty below zero for the last few weeks now) so could she just be dehydrated or burning more calories with the dry cold and the stress of the puppy being here? Seems like all she does is sleep, which she's pretty much always done unless it's potty or eating time. She usually just has two meals a day, sometimes she gets up for water or dry food overnight a few times. So far I thought she always had something in her stomach so I'm worried about this sudden onset vomiting. She did not get into anything foreign that I know of, I have too many pets to not be vigilant about what's in reach of their mouths. She did have some home cooked steak in the last day or so which we're beginning to think she may have developed an allergy to, so that will probably have to be refused her from now on, poor thing. She loves beef but I am not sure it loves her. Many thanks in advance for all replies.

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | Small breed are known for throwing up stomach bile in the am due to a reaction to having an empty stomach. The only suggestion that I can give you would be to start giving her an additional meal later in the evening. that way she has some substance to get her through the night. So that she doesn't get to overweight just portion her reg. amount into three instead of two meals. If that doesn't work you may want to contact your family vet who knows her best and would be better at answering your concerns.

| I have several small dogs that will throw up in the morning if they go to bed with empty tummys. About 3hrs before bedtime I feed everyone a little kibble, its like a party. They all sit on the floor around me and I just give each of them 5 or 6 pieces. We sometimes practise commands at the same time. As long as I do this and make sure that the morning meal happens by 9am,everyone does well. I hope empty tummy is all that this was for your baby. |

YT Addict | Well she did better with extra food yesterday, but it would seem she can't manage any of her usual treats: yummy chummies, tillman's training tips lamb flavor, and nothing with beef and possibly duck. I boiled her some chicken breast and it looks like that stays down. If it's not empty tummy what could it be? Is there anything else I should watch out for? Also she won't eat around the puppy and only takes food if I hand feed her.

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | Im not sure... MY pups have never had this problem. Have you asked your vet? Did you say you have another pup? When did you get it? It could be that she is just not good with pups. It takes time to adjust.

YT Addict | Yes, hubby brought home a husky/dachsund/pomeranian female in early December for my daughter's bday. She's a bundle of energy and I can see most days she just really bugs Jenna. I'm in the process of switching Jenna to Orijen/Acana now and we're phasing out Natural Balance which seems to be giving both dogs trouble all at once. She's eating better now but I really have to insist some days that she eat. I'll be talking to her vet this week if she starts with the vomiting again or begins to refuse food.

Ops sorry you did say the in your org post. Well she's got a lot going on doesn't she? New food, new addition to the family all at once. Changing her food is a big deal with dogs. It takes time to adjust to the new food. It takes a toll on the system and it not easy on them. Do it gradual: (mix old and new food) 90/10, 80/20, 50/50, and so on until you faze out the old food and are feeding all new food. It you do it all at once it cause their system to get really out of wack and causes diarrhea for weeks. This is in some way a normal reaction to the new pup. She seems to be showing sign of nerves like you said. I would say that she is not a happy girl, at all. Try to take some time for socialization exercises with her and the new pup. Do some commands and treats with both present and see how they get along together. Reenforce her social skills... it wont be easy but keep it up and she will adjust in time.
