| I'm so scared!!! I don't know what to do! Hi everyone. My yorkie is 4 years old, very small about 3lbs. For about 3 days he started having loose runny stools I suspected from changing his diet. Well I tried home remedies such as pumpkin, gaterade, and fasting him for 24 hours, but when I noticed mucous and a faint amount of blood in his stools I took him to the vet. The vet told me they gave him some Medicine while there (not sure because they wouldn't let me go in with Kobe which I didn't appreciate. I can't see whats being done to my dog?!). She then gave me prescriptions for Metronidazole 62.5mg and this powder probiotic I have to sprinkle on his food. I asked her since they gave him medication if I should give him medicine at home tonight and she stated yes. I fed him with the probiotic and he was fine. I gave him the metronidazole around 8pm tonight and he was fine. About twenty minutes ago I heard papers moving and for a second thought he was running around playing. I called him to come to bed but when he didnt I KNEW something was wrong. I look up and Kobe is stiff and thrashing around! I panicked so I picked him up, then put him down to make sure I didn't hurt him. It went on for at least a minute and as he was stiff I noticed he was pooping. Once he stopped thrashing he seemed limped and seemed dizzy and couldn't walk or stand straight! I went straight online and see the medicine can cause seizures! I'm so upset! He clearly had an overdose! But I was following the vets instructions! I don't know what to do! I just moved and paid summer tuition so I'm wiped out until I get paid. I'm so scared right now and I feel like the worst mommy in the world! He's never had seizures before and I don't know what to do. I want to throw this medicine out the window at this point! Any advice? I'm so scared, I will be up all night watching him. Sorry for the typos, I can't even think straight right now! |

| Sure sounds like a seizure to me. Toss that med! Or don't give him anymore!! I would stick with trying the rice & boiled chicken, small amounts maybe 4 times a day. Also the stuff you sprinkle on the food will work wonders. The tiny bit of blood in the stool isn't that much of a red flag as some lead ya to believe. If he was have some tummy problems and runny poo he was probably just a bit irritated. I would still notify the vet about the seizure and ask for advice over the phone. Make sure he is still peeing too, getting plenty of fluids. |

| Praying for you> I had a scare similar to this about a month ago. I thought my little 6 lb Sassy was having a seizure because she was jerking and kicking violently, i jerked her off the floor, thought she had died she was so weak, but instead she was choking on her food. I started the doggy heimlich maneuver and prayed. Thank God she is ok. I would call the vet and explain to him what happened.

| It may not have been from the Metro at all. The vet needs to know what is happening. If your pup has another seizure in the near future, it is an emergency because they can start clustering together. Your pup has to go back to the vet.

| 62.5 mg seems like an awful high dose. I would call and confirm the dose with the vet. Something is not right.... Prayers for the little man

| I am so sorry to hear that you and your sweet boy are going through this. I would definitely call the vet and let them know what happened. Sending prayers for you and your little boy.

| It appears to be within the normal dosing guidelines, although if it was a reaction, the vet may want to do blood work and start an IV.

| Please call the vet, they will help you. Don't fool around waiting to see if it happens again, something is not right and it could be a very easy fix. |

| I agree, the dose is appropriate, but some dogs do not tolerate Metronidazole. I wouldn't give him anymore until speaking to the vet, and she may want to see him again. You may be able to exchange the meds to save some $$.

| Hi everyone thank you so much for the responses.please bear with me, my Internet is not up and running yet so I'm using my iPhone, hence no paragraphs for example! I called the vet to bring him in but they told me it wasnt necessary and to give him the medicine every other day, but I'm honestly not sure if I want to give him the medicine at all. But honestly they seemed really relaxed about the situation, which irritated me some because I felt as if I was overreacting which I wasn't! I took him to the humane society but theg don't accept walk ins, so I made an appointment for Thursday. I really don't want to wait, but I'm new to this area so right now I'm googling and calling other vet hospitals. He seems okay today, which I know, doesn't mean anything, but it feels good to see him running and playing around. I'm still watching him like a hawk though. I emailed my professors and told them I'm missing a few classes and I also took off work; hopefully I don't get fired, I just started! But Kobe is basically my baby and he comes first! I also was able to get in touch with my mother who transferred some money to my account to take him to he hospital. He doesn't seem interested in eating so far today, so I'm thinking about going to get him some chicken, rice and a few other yummy things. Today has been awful though thus far. I didn't sleep at all last night and today I've been super stressed and on edge. You all are great though! It feels good to find a community of those who love their babies just as much as I do! It's a whole 'nother thread but I hung up in my friends face earlier. She called when I was crying about the humane society not seeing him until Thursday and remarked "um it's just a dog. It's not that serious." grrrrrrr! |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I hope you can get him in t another vet. I would never tell someone to go against their vets advice but if it were me I would not give him the medicine until I saw another vet. I am glad your mom is helping. I will keep him in my prayers.
