| Need help - Hurt leg I have a 8 month old yorkie pup named Nyke and last night he was playing with my 4 year son and I heard Nyke yell. I picked him up and he seemed okay. I put him down and he wouldn't walk in one of his back legs. He's not crying or anything. I checked it as best as I could and it seems okay and he didn't cry or anything. This morning when I took him to potty he's still holding up the leg. Right now we are not letting him walk and holding him alot which he loves. He doesn't have any other symptoms. Should I wait a few days or should I take him in? Thanks |

| I personally would take him to the vet but I take my dogs to the vet for just about anything. I think it's better to know how bad the injury is so that you know exactly how to care for him. He may also need an anti inflammatory. Very good to keep him inactive.

| I had a similar experience recently with my new girl Annie. She is so much smaller than my other two that they sort of ran over her in their hurry to cross the yard. She yelped once then only limped. Gently squeezing up and down the leg did not seem to cause any pain. Joints felt tight but very movable. I took her in the second day of limping. Doc just exmined and did pretty much the same as I had, squeezing up and down the leg and working the joints. He said probably nothing serious and gave some relaphen for pain/inflammation. She was still limping on day 5 (I think it was) so I took her in again and asked for xrays. Vet complied -- nothing broken no sign of a problem. She limped for just over a week and then it was good as new. So, I guess it was just a soft tissue injury like a sprain. Still, those can hurt and a little something to help with pain might be in order. My Jack Russell actually had a come-and-go limp that bothered me. I took her in twice and by the time her vet appt came she was no longer limping and I think they thought I was crazy. Finaly I got her seen the 3rd time while she was still limping. Nothing appeared broken but the vet did full body xrays (under anesthesia) and found she has a narrowed space between 2 vertebrae which may cause occasional nerve impingement, which results in the limp. It is slight -- no action required but he gave me relaphen to have on hand to reduce inflammation which should also stop the nerve impingement if she limps again. After all that to do and $$$, she has never limped again. Go figure. Just giving my experiences with "limps." I would still check them out but it will probably be nothing major to worry about. Still, you want to be sure.

| I would take him in, especially with the upcoming holiday and many vet's being closed. The fact that he is not putting weight on it means he is in pain. We've had so many Yorkies break their legs, I'd want it xrayed just to be sure. |

| This happened to my Ellie, and she had a broken leg right where the joints connect, kind of like our elbow.

| Yes take him in. IHe just may be one that doesn't cry when hurt. You never know. You don't want to have problem later on because it healed wrong.

| This fall Buster had jumped down and jammed one of his front legs. He would lift it and hold it out. I found out he has arthritis in his front legs. I also had noticed that he would yelp and lift his back leg and I found out that he also has LP in his back legs. He had one knee operated on this October and he has fully recovered now. I would definitely take him to a vet and have it checked out. That way you will know if it is a sprain where you only have to monitor their activity or if it is something more serious. I was lucky that I got Pet Plan insurance before I found out about Buster's legs. They did not exclude his Luxating Patella as some of the others do so it really helped with the surgical bills. Good luck with Nyke. |
