Legg Calve Perthes Disease I am new to this site so please bear with me. I have an 8 month old adorable male Yorkie who has recently been diagnosed with Legg Perthes Disease. To those of you out there that have encountered this problem can you please advise....Cody is scheduled for surgery on April 20th--our general vet who we have the utmost confidence in is performing the procedure. Should Cody be having his surgery done by an Orthopedic Specialist?? I want the best for him but don't know if a specialist is necessary. What can I expect following the surgery?? Thanks for your help, we are heart saddened to have to put him through this..

I had Cali's recent abdominal surgery done by a board certified surgeon because they suspected a liver shunt and my vet couldn't fix it if it turned out to be one. Good Luck.

| I got this info off a web site Here's the site: http://www.vetinfo.com/dencyclopedia/deleggcp.html You might want to go read more... "Treatment of this condition varies according to the severity of the signs seen. In mild cases, enforced rest may be sufficient to allow healing of the damaged areas to occur. In some cases, immobilization of the affected limb using an Ehmer sling may be beneficial to recovery. Many dogs have advanced cases of this disease by the time they are examined by a veterinarian and medical treatment is not likely to work. In these dogs, excision of the femoral head (ball portion of the hip joint) is often beneficial. Removal of this section of the bone diminishes painful bony contact in the hip joint. Recovery from this surgery can be slow with recovery periods of up to one year sometimes occurring before good use of the affected leg returns. If muscle atrophy is not present at the time of surgery the recovery time is usually much less. Pain relief and anti-inflammatory medications may be beneficial. " Good luck with your baby! Let us know how the surgery comes out. My Wosie had leg surgery to repair her growth plate, and she did very well!

Thank you Patti for your good wishes--your Yorkies are adorable. Do all Yorkies have great personalities??? Cody is lovable, affectionate and well behaved. I'm not sure if we just got lucky or this is their temperment--

Sprain or Broken Leg Hi, I have a Y orkie who is 1 year old. I called his vet because he is limping from the left side. He told that if he does not scream when I touch his leg or cry when he walks that it must be a sprain leg. He gave me an appointment for tomorrow morning. I'm suffering because it kills me to see my adorable Achilles this way. If someone already when through something like this please advise me. Thank you

Sprain or Broken Leg?? Dear Achilles, Sorry to hear your baby is exhibiting some discomfort..Our Cody is 9 months old and was diagnosed with Legg Calve Perthes disease--easily detected by an X-Ray. He was not crying or in any obvious discomfort but he would not use his hind leg and we knew somehting was wrong. Ask your vet to X-ray the hip--only way to tell if the disease is present. The positive is Cody is about 1 week post op and he is doing vry well. I understand your heart break seeing your Yorkie in discomfort, hopefully it is only a sprain and he will just need a bit of rest. If it is Perthes disease I would be happy to relay all information I have researched. Good Luck! Margaret

Just today Reese was diagnosed with Legg Calve Perthes disease also. She is 10 months old and I noticed she was not using her rear right leg....xrays showed it was forsure Legg Calve Perthes disease. The cost of the surgery to help this is going to cost us $1500.00, and my husband is not happy at all. As a matter of fact, we are not even talking right now becuz he can't see putting that much money into " a dog". He doesn't understand that she is not just a dog to me, she is like one of my children - Anyway, just wanted to add we are going through this right now too. Good luck everyone !
