Ear Cleaning

Do you all clean your Yorkie's ears? I was wondering if I should so I thought I'd make a poll. If you said yes, what do you use?

I use ear wash every two weeks to prevent Amber from getting ear mites it also aids in wax removal.

since i found out that it cost me $7.00 for the vets asst. to rip out hair from the ear and it don't hurt them at all, i pull it out my self now.

My current yorky babies have never had any ear problems, so I've never had to give any special care/cleaning for them other than basic bathing. I did have a foster once who had horrible problems and special drops needed to be used. But for now.....if it ain't broke..........

I thought mine had ear mites, cause they scratched their ears only. The vet said dogs usually don't have ear mites, that the hair in their ears tickles and should be removed by the groomer regularly, and I bought the $40 ear wash from the vet - probably didn't need to.

I would recommend Vetenarians Best Wet and Dry Ear Relief. When we first got our cat from the humane society, he had ear mites, and really bad ear wax build up... he itched...and itched... and was clawing his face and ears all up. It was horrible! I felt so bad for him, cause he would scream out loud when he scratched his ears because it was so irritating! So I went and bought this really expensive stuff just for ear mites, and it didn't do anything. So my mom recommed Vetenarians Best Wet & Dry because she uses it on her dogs... so I bought it online, and tried it out on Sammy, and his ears were better (no mites, and WAX FREE) within a week max. I was so happy it actually worked!

After their bath I use a dry Q-tip to dry & clean them out. Never use the same swab in both ears, always change to a new clean one. Y? In case there happens to be any infection or mites u will not comtaniate to clean ear.

Is it a "no no" to clean their ears w/ a q-tip w/ rubbing alcohol on it?

What do u use to pull the hairs out? im affraid to hurt them

U can use alcohol on a q-tip but it tends to dry the ear & if there is a scratch it will burn a bit. Most groomers or owners will use peroxide but yes some do use alcohol.

To Pluck, NOT rip, the hair out of the ears u can use hemostats or a tweezer. U do not lpuck a large number of hairs at a time as this IS very uncomfortable, plucking a few at a time will actually get more hair but it does mostly tickle so they will shake their head. Now this is for the hair inside the ears.

For the hair on the ear leather, most of it u can just use your fingers I gently pull it in the opposite way of the hair growth. Any excess that finger do not get u may use an electric trimmer. U also shave the 1/4 - 1/3 of the ear tip & shape to a point on the inside as well as on the outside of the ear for a nice neat clean look & to keep the weight off the ear on pups so they will stand.

Does anyone know Why there is wax in the ears?

It is a form of protectant lubrication for the sensitive ears. It works also as a dust catcher so to speak <LOL> If u use alcohol or any drying substance too often it will cause the ear to go into hyper production mode & secrete too much wax & then cause a problem in that sense as well. So, cleaning once a week or with a bath when needed is the way to go in my opinion, on already healthy ears.
