Unhappy Grrr...

Why do a lot of people assume that because you are young and in school that you aren't responsible and are too busy to take care of a dog. In my personal opinion going to school is no different than work. In either one you are gone for about 8 hours a day. I mean just because im in school doesnt mean I wont be able to take care of a dog and just because someone they know couldnt doesnt me I am the same. Thats called globalizing and its wrong. Maybe its just me but it hurts my feelings when i ask for help to get a yorkie in the future and people tell me that I wont be able to take care of it. I know I know it happens a lot. but you cant assume that everyone is like that. or am i the only one who feels this way..... sorry i just really had to get that out.

Well.....If you cannot work because you are going to school, where is the money coming from to pay for everything? If you are working AND going to school, where is the TIME coming from to spend with the puppy? Just asking questions here, I'm NOT trying to put you down at all.

Work and school aren't even close to being the same. With work you go and come home...you're done for the day. With school you go, you come home...you have home work and study time. I know how strong the 'want' can be for a Yorkie but with a full time student a pet can be a distraction and the dog usually gets the short end of the stick.

Hi, I can understand why you're upset. It's unfortunate that when you're asking for help people have to have assumptions. But, I can see why people on YT are doing so. On YT, we see a lot of posts from college students who are looking for cheaper yorkies because they can't afford anything more than a certain amount. When you see a post like that, you assume that they can't afford the proper things that come with getting a new dog. Such as vet expenses (which is a lot), food, toys, misc. items. And then theres the fact that if you're in school, how will you have time to handle a new dog? This also can be said to those with jobs though (as you pointed out.) I guess it depends on your background. Such as maybe people work from home, are housewives/husbands, bring and afford for their dogs to go to daycare, etc.

I think it all comes down to responsibility. A year ago I graduated from college and moved back home. 6 months later I purchased my puppy. In my situation, I was very lucky in that I had a job to afford my pup, and my dad worked at home so he could take care of him. I know I wouldnt have had the time and expense to have had my pup during college. But you know what, I believe that a responsible student can have the time and perhaps expense to support a pup : ) Just not me haha. So yea, if you can afford it, and have time in between classes, and are responsible, then I say go for it : ) I knew a few college students in my apartment complex that had dogs. Good luck with your search!

My husband and I are both college students and we have plenty of time to spend with Marty. We both have full class loads of 15-18 hours/week (some of which are internet courses that we do from home) and we each work a campus job for 6 hours a week. That's much less time away from home than a full time job would require. As for money, we had a great savings account from both of us working full-time for a year before we started college and spending very little money that wasn't necessary. Also, we both get grants and I have an amazing scholarship that gives us several thousand dollars each semester. We are bringing in well more than we absolutely need in order to take care of our Yorkie and ourselves.

I, too, get tired of hearing that college students can't or shouldn't have pets. I feel that because of our flexible college schedules, we are able to spend much more time with Marty than someone who works a full-time job. In fact, Marty has been trained to do about 12 different tricks on top of the normal behavioral commands (such as stay, come here, etc.). That could not have been accomplished if we didn't have enough time to spend with him. He also gets all of the vet visits that he needs, has plenty to eat, tons of toys and clothes, and anything else that a normal dog should have.

Don't let someone tell you that you can't do something. I wasn't working when I got my yorkie and was going to school full time. I had enough in my savings that I could afford to buy the dog and all of the extra expenses that come with having a dog. Mr. Biggs has gotten 110% of my time and attention from day 1 and has every poccible luxury a dog can have. I currently work at a daycare and am still in school. Sure they take up a lot of my time, but my dog gets a ton of attention! The way I see it, it's like having a kid. People that work and go to school have kids all the time and still are able to give their kids the attention they need, so if they can do that, then I can do the same with a dog (at least dogs are cheaper). lol. I did it, I'm happy, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Good luck!

You're right. Work and school aren't the same. Here's a typical schedule for a college student...mine. I go to class sometime between 8 and 10 every morning Monday through Friday. I am home by 12:35 at the latest (only two days a week). The way my husband and I have made our schedules, he is never home alone more than two hours. Homework is usually always done well before five and this is after eating lunch and spending time with Marty when I first come home. Saturday morning, I do my online coursework and have the rest of the day to spend with Marty and my husband and Sunday we have the whole day unless I have an extra hard assignment such as a research paper, in which case I would spend a few hours working on that. I'd also like to mention that anytime I'm doing my homework, 99% of the time Marty is laying on my lap while I'm on the computer. If not, he is on the floor at my feet.

So yes, you spend time at home doing work, but the actual time you are away from home is much less. So it more than evens out...except that Marty gets to be with me during most of the time I'm "working" which is not the case with a full-time job.

I don't think being young and going to school makes you irresponsible. I think if you want a yorkie, then go for it. You are responsible....or else you wouldnt be going to college. If you want something bad enough, you can always find a way, time and money to get it. I wish you the best of luck, and don't let people get you down!!

If you really want a puppy then go for it. People told me that I couldn't take care of one when I was considering getting one but guess what? I'm 20, I attend school full time, I work 2 jobs and I have 2 yorkies And I still have plenty of time to spend with them. They are always with me. Though when I'm at work my bf is with them.....so maybe go get yourself a bf?? lol no jk but you can do it. Don't let people tell you otherwise.
