I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Angora Sweater for Christmas? Something you should know before you buy another angora sweater is that some countries pluck the fur from the rabbit while the rabbit is still alive. Please sign this petition if you would like to end this horrible practice. “The investigator filmed workers who were violently ripping the fur from the animals' sensitive skin as they screamed at the top of their lungs in pain. After this terrifying and barbaric ordeal, which the rabbits endure every three months, many of them appeared to go into shock, lying motionless inside their tiny, filthy cages, with no solid flooring or bedding, and without the vital companionship of other rabbits. After two to five years, those who have survived are hung upside down, their throats are slit, and their bodies are sold. Please know that not ALL farmers hurt animals while producing angora fur, this petition is not against them but against the farmers who produce the fur in a way that animals are being hurt. We are not against ALL angora fur but only the fur that causes stress and pain to the rabbits.” Petition · Make it illegal to import Angora Fur · Change.org

| I learned about angora through a thread Ann posted in the animal welfare section. It was very timely because I was just about to add an angora sweater for dogs to my boutique. I had no idea and nixed the product right away. Thank you for sharing this.

Until the practice is deemed illegal, I hope everyone stops buying it.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | It's actually very soft and non itchy. It sounds like you may be allergic.

| All the Angora sweaters I have ever had were soooooo soft! The issue I had with Angora was it seemed to shed some, and it made me sneeze. My aunt had rabbits that I THINK they used the fur, but they plucked the fur when the rabbits were about to nest, when they plucked their OWN fur to line nest boxes with....but I will have to contact her to see if that is accurate information. I know there was no ripping and tearing the fur off the rabbits, nothing cruel was going on. As far as eating rabbit meat, they did eat rabbit meat from rabbits they raised, but the rabbits were not horrifically murdered.....and I do not think they were "bled" after they were killed.....people that live on farms and supply us with meat know how that is done humanely. My son raised rabbits in high school....we were going to raise them to eat....never happened. I fell in love with all those dad gum rabbits and it would have been over my dead body that those rabbits would be killed for a meal! Same thing with a calf from the rodeo calf scramble.....and the little lamb.....I am NOT a farmer.....I can not raise my food for my table! |

| I spoke with my aunt. These rabbits NATURALLY molt about every 60-90 days....the fur/fiber is easily collected by combing the rabbits with pin brushes....they also can just pluck the fur from the back and chest (bib) and stomach...it comes out very easily, as it is being molted by the rabbit naturally. The soft fur on the legs is clipped/sheared with clippers. Also, pregnant rabbits will line their nesting boxes with this fabulous fur as they pluck it themselves. These rabbits require frequent combing/grooming, as they can have real problems with hairballs, like long haired cats....the rabbits can not vomit the hairballs up and will starve to death as they become sicker and sicker. These rabbits require a lot of grooming, brushing every 4-5 days, between the moltings. She did mention that the PETA film showing the harvesting of fibre was cirrculated worldwide, and the unfortunate thing about that film was the fact that there are hundreds of Angora farmers that are ethical and did suffer some minor damage from the film, but thankfully, not much. Not all Angora wool is harvested as shown in that PETA film...especially rabbits in Europe, the British Isles, Canada and USA....to harvest the fur like shown in the film, would damage the fibre as well as the rabbit, which would then not produce the fine, soft fur needed for these farmers to make a living, which is why this breed of rabbit is raised. There are SOME places in China that may harvest the fur as depicted in the film, but the majority of Angora farmers all over Europe, England, and the USA, do NOT harvest their product in that manner. Fortunately, the demand for this wonderfully soft fur has remained high and decreased demands have not been a hardship for many hundreds of ethical farmers outside of factories in China that have never practiced the inhumane harvesting of the soft fur. It is very expensive to get the rabbits to the age when they produce the best fur, the right length, the premium quality that is demanded by the people that buy the fiber from the farmers...these farmers will not harvest the fur in a method that is going to damage the fiber or the rabbit! I KNEW my aunt did not savage her rabbits to get that fine fur!! Great to know majority of the farmers do not do so either! Last edited by Yorkiemom1; 11-03-2014 at 02:16 PM. |

Well, I pluck my eyebrows, I can take the pain, but plucking thick hair all over the body, is a different story. Are they plucking just a few hairs at a time or are they going taking big wads of hair to go as fast as possible to get the job done? I'm not against using rabbits to eat; this isn't about that, I believe that there are ways to kill humanely. This is about plucking the hair out every few months. Wouldn't this hurt any animal with fur all over its body? I have nothing against them shaving the rabbits; I think plucking should be outlawed.

| Maybe you're allergic to wool, as I am. Many times angora is spun with wool. I knit with one such yarn by Rowan. Rowan is one of the few humanely sourced angora yarns.

| I won't click on the link but I have to tell you one story. I have a chain link fence and a rabbit was stuck. I went immediately to get my large wire cutters...I didn't care one bit about the fence. By the time I got back out there, it had gotten loose by itself. I would have thought they sheared the rabbits or something like that. It is beyond sad.
