| My Professor lost my paper worth 20% of the class grade! So I have just received an e-mail from my professor saying that I didn't turn in the paper for Feb 22. I have been very ill for a few weeks, so I haven't been able to make it to class recently, but have been getting the notes. I handed in the paper, and he is saying that I didn't. It's obvious that he thinks I am lying to him. What should I do? Has anyone else been in this position? This is a full year course, worth 6 credit units, and also costs about $900.00! If I don't get credit for this paper, I will have a very low grade or even risk failing this course and not getting my credits! |

| This is a very sticky situation and it's always been one of my fears. Unfortunately, you probably don't have any proof that you did turn it in, right? So it's just your word against his.... Were you in class the day that you had to turn it in? Maybe you can prove that you were there by showing him your notes or telling him about something he discussed that day? Do you still have a copy of the paper on your computer? I would print out another copy and give it to him ASAP! Hopefully, he will be willing to work with you. Good luck!

| I feel for you. I can remember those college days. Having said that, I want to tell you that I have taught a college course for a few semesters and every single semester I get a story like that. I will try to give the student the benefit of doubt so my suggestion is for you to start begging. Only the coldest of hearts could turn you down. It will help if your assignments have always been complete and turned in on time. You can point that out as part of your argument. But it won't do any good if you don't turn in the paper. Even 1/2 of the credit for a late paper is better than none. Did you turn it in yourself or did you trust someone else to do it??? |

I turned it in myself, right on the pile where we always leave them. I had to leave for an appointment that day, but I knew I shouldn't leave it with someone else to drop it off so I dropped it off and then left for my appointment. This has never happened to me before! I am so stressed!

| I'm so sorry this happened to you. This is the exact reason we tell our kids to make a copy of anything you hand in.

| Is it a paper that is saved on your computer? Could you just print it out again and take a bit of a hit for a late mark? I'd do anything possible... beg him to let you do another one! PS I see you're from Saskatoon, so am I!

| Ask him to check one more time...sometimes if it was stapled together, it might be stuck to the staple in another paper and he didn't realize it... |

| Thanks everyone for your advice! I have an extra copy. I always make copies of my work. He is looking one more time for it, and then will decide if I can hand in the copy I had made. (He seems skeptical, I don't blame him! I'm sure he gets this all the time, it just sucks when it actually happens to you!) |

| I too, am a college professor. I teach in a graduate program so I don't get this story very often, and if I do, it is usually true. I have lost papers - it is hard to do that, but I have picked it up and put it in another file or have two papers stuck together. Anyway, it can happen, but it is not common. It also doesn't help that you have not been going to class - is attendance optional? If so, that is OK. Either way he has probably noticed that you are not in class and thinks you do not really care about the class. I'm glad he is looking for it. If he does not find it, I hope he lets you turn in another paper. Good luck.

HAND IT IN ANYWAY! Be assertive. This is 20% of your grade! Don't take no for an answer! I confess that I have been nagged into giving students breaks. Ask for extra credit too.

| I think I would have turned in another copy of the paper the second he contacted me saying he didn't have it.
