| Lost Yorkie Pup Guys, I'm writing right now with tears in my eyes. My Alexa had a beautiful baby girl on the 29th. At first she didn't want to milk or clean her but after the first 26 hours (where I had to do it every two hours) she came around and behave like a wonderful mom. We also have a Westie (1yr) she was very interested on the pup and stayed with me the first night. She appeared to be very gentle with her and mom never had a problem with the westie approaching the pup. Last Saturday I went out to my sister's and when came back home found the pup almost dead. Had some wounds and there was some blood on the floor. She was very cold. I rushed her to the vet but she couldn't save her. This is my first birth. Could someone bring some light into this? My Alexa is searching the entire house looking for her pup and it breaks my heart. I try to play with her and she forgets for a while. I love Molly (westie), she is very very gentle and loving but I'm so angry at her. She was confined to a create. But I see her eyes and don't understand how such a wonderful dog could have done that. Please I really need to bring some closure to this. I have my first born coming soon and I am really worried. I love my two dogs with all my heart. They have been my daughters and I love them as such. Last edited by dbrea; 01-07-2008 at 08:09 AM. Reason: email |

I don't think your little Westie had any ill intentions... it's a natural curiousity and she probably just didn't realize what this tiny baby even was... Don't be angry with her.... Dogs are very resilient and Alexa will do fine. Just comfort each other... and take care of yourself and that little one coming! <<hugs>>

| I am so sorry to read your post. Do you think your Westie tried to pick up the pup or was intentionally rough? It is must so confusing for you. Warmly, Deborah

Luvs Lulu Donating Member | So sorry to hear about your baby. Maybe your westie picked her up and then mamma got angry. Some animals don't like their babies to be touched by others and might be angry and hurt the pup because the other animal's smell is on them. Either way it's a horrible tragedy. So sorry for your loss.

| I am so sorry. I'm sure whatever happened, it was not meant to hurt the baby. Rest peacefully, Precious Baby Girl.

| I am very sorry to hear this...I know you must be heartbroken! I am a little confused though...so the Westie was in a crate while you left? The yorkie mom did this to her own pup?

| Thanks to all for you words. It is really good to know there are people out there that share your feelings. Molly (Westie) was in the house free as always. Before Saturday night she never showed signs of wanting to hurt the pup. I really don't know what happened. When I came home both girls came to the door to greet me as always but when my wife went to check on the little girl she wasn't in the whelping box, she was in a corner of the room, cold and with puncture wounds. There was some blood on the floor and Molly had some of the hair around her mouth tainted with blood. Alexa didn't show any signs of fighting with the westie. My pain is triple. For one, thinking of the little baby, the pain she must have felt. Now Alexa is looking all over the house for her pup and finally, thinking that my baby (Molly) who is the most loveable dog I have ever seen could have done something like hurting the pup really brings me down. We are all trying to get over it. I'd like to take the opportunity to ask a question, Alexa has milk left on her. Any advice on how to go about that. I don't want her to get sick. Thanks again to all of you. |

| I just feel so bad for you and I also feel bad for Alexa. This is just the saddest story. It sounds like Molly is just a sweetheart so I do not think that she would of intentionally hurt the pup. Perhaps Molly was playing with it like a toy. Just soooo sad!!!

On the milk note...When my female had pups in October she had two nipples that were not getting used due to them being the far top ones and to small to latch onto. Our vet said to use a cold/cool compress on them a few times a day and that would stop the milk supply to them. You might want to try that and/or they might dry up on their own with not being used.
