| Won't Drink... This is just a quick question.. my mom got a maltese chi mix puppy yesterday. She's 8 wks old, weighs just over 2 lbs. This is the problem, as far as we can tell, she has only had a few swallows of water since about 3 yesterday.... she just refuses to drink. I told my mom to offer sugar water and nutrical, but the baby won't drink. Any suggestions? Thanks so much!

| Poor baby. Obviously you don't want her to dehydrate, so take a small syringe and squirt water in her mouth. This way she will have to swallow. I would also suggest putting a bit of honey in a bowl of water. But first and foremost use the syringe. Does she have any diahrrea? Tinksmom |

| No, no diahrrea. She has had three normal poops since yesterday afternoon, but no pee since then as far as we know. She has been on tile the whole time, so it is very likely that if she had peed, we would know. We will try the syringe thing and see if that works. Thanks!

| Poor baby, she needs to drink. She's pooping, so that's a good sign. But, You have to find some way to get water in her, even if she licks on an ice cube. If you can't, I'd get her over to the Vets. Best of luck to you!

| As suggested before, a bit of honey in water may entice her to drink...Give her water through a syringe if she won't drink....Keep us posted. Make sure her gums are pink...Maybe try some unflavored Pedialyte.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Yikes! Lack of thirst can be a red flag - keep a close eye on this baby! Give her canned food, bc at least she'll get some extra moisture there. Flavor the water w/ anything you can think of and see if anything takes. Also, add extra water to her canned food and dry food!

| I have had to give water 3CC's at a time thru a syringe to my dogs at times. i did it once on an adult dog I had just purchased for about three days. every three or four hours. Also, as someone already said add a little bit of water to her wet food. just be careful because that can cause diarreha. but it does get the water in them. |

| It's possible the dog is afraid of the water bowl itself or the location of the water bowl. All it takes with a puppy is one thing to cause a nervous reaction around something to make them afraid. Try moving the bowl or changing the type of bowl. If the dog doesn't drink, she should go to the vet and get fluids.

| My last puppy lost her appetite and would not drink or eat. Had to give her 50% Dextrose by syringe 1/2 cc, she is only 1lb 4 oz... You can pick the Dextrose up from your vet or you can mix sugar and water and give to her, every 2-3 hours. If she is just over 2 lbs, I would give her 3/4 of a cc...at a time. Be sure to give it slowly so it wont go into her lungs or she chokes. Good luck, hope the baby is better soon.

| Update on Snowbee I just thought I would let everyone know that Snowbee is doing absolutely fantastic now.... it must have been the stress of a new place and people and no longer being around her 3 brothers and sisters. She also seems to be getting used to the house and the other dog pretty well - they play together nicely. I'll share some pics - she's peeking out of my dad's jacket pocket
