| How long is too long?? Hello, Question for everyone! I've posted here several times and get a lot of good advice, but the questions keep coming. I want to make sure I am making a good decision......I work 30-40 hrs a week. Some days some evenings. I've heard over and over that Yorkies shouldn't be left alone too long. How long is too long? I would assusme a lot of you also have jobs. What do you think? She would have my cat for company when I am gone and be in an indoor gated place, such as my kitchen, for the most part depending on what time of day I have to leave. Is this o.k., or are Yorkies best suited for people who are stay at home? I hope you don't tell me yes because they are such a sweet little dog!!! But, I have to think about the animal. Of course, when I am home, he/she will get A LOT of attention!! |

| My husband and I both worked full time when I got my babies. We got two though, and they make great company for each other. I have been completely happy with that decision, sometimes I think they have so much energy I could never keep up with one if it didn't have the other. It made it a lot easier to leave them alone knowing they had each other.

| Thanks for your response! Yeah, I figured there were at least some yorkie parents who had to work full time! I'm surprised it even worked with puppies! I was looking for a puppy and am still considering it, but I found an adult who is 14mo. She's pretty sweet. I love them all!!! This decision feels like years ago when I was going to become a parent!! When is a good time? You just do it and it works!!! I had four children nearly in a row and if I can do that, I should be a good yorkie mom, huh??? |

| We work split shifts Hubby works days I work evenings so the most we have to leave our dogs is 2 hours every couple of weeks. I'm not critisising anyone else for leaving them longer but it just isn't something I would personally consider doing. This has worked well for us for the past 21 years so I can't imagine doing anything else. |

I think the 14 mo old sounds perfect! none of that baby chewing stuff up! Good luck on your decision - maybe you'll get lucky like me. I 'retired' in December, convinced hubby that if I stayed home he wouldn't feel guilty about not wanting to clean house - so far, so good!

| We have 2 as well - because we work. But when we are at home they cling to us if we have been aways too much - they really are social animals and I would say you shouldn't be away more than 6-7 hours 5 days a week...

| I would definitely confine the new pup, regardless of the age, to a small cage or a room which you can search for possible problems. Bad habits are hard to break, a cage will keep them from chewing on walls and baseboards as well as furniture. This can ensure safety for your new baby. I am home, but mine play like mad for an hour or so in the morning, sleep and hang around most of the day, and have another wild rambunctious time in the evening. Just be careful not to leave them bored.

| I think you can make any situation work. The cat is a great idea! They can keep each other company. The older dog is also good because a puppy really does need 24/7 attention. I think you are doing things right. It would also be great if you could find a neighbor or hire a professional pet sitter to ocme in once a day and walk and play with her for an hour. You are going to be a wonderful mommy to your new fur baby!! |
