| Yappy Yorkie My yorkie is 13 weeks old. Recently she has learned how to yap. At first it started when she needed to go outside to use the bathroom, now she yaps all the time and for no apparent reason. I was told that I needed to train her to stop while she is young. I want her to bark when she wants to go outside and when there is an intruder, but I don't want her to yap all the time. What should I do? Is there anything I can do? |

| that means, replying to your message to move it up onthe list in the forum... I dont really have an answer but my Boston Terrier responds very well to me telling him SSSHHHHHH..... and he knows then that it is not time to bark... My Tootie is a yapper too and just yapps to be making noise. Hope barks when she hears the others going at it.... Hope is learning the SSSHHHH thing very well but Tootie.. well, he is a lost cause in the barking world...

| Winnie wa snever yappy, but I have heard that dogs HATE the sound of metal on metal...so everytime he's being yappy you could try saying "enough" (that's the word we use) or "stop" and shake a tin can filled with pennies. It should get him to stop and associate the word you use to mean stop barking. Also, you could try giving him a treat when he's just sitting there being good. Don't give a treat when he stops barking though...he will think that he can bark whenever he wants a treat. Good luck! |

| The penny's in the can thing really does work. Molly doesn't bark a lot but, when she sees someone outside she will bark. I don't really like that because I don't want her to bark her head off everytime someone comes to the door. So when see barks at something I don't like I shake the can and say NO BARKING. If she doesn't stop I put her in her kennel for 5 minutes.
