If you start letting him sleep with you, he's not gonna want it any other way from now on... It's hard, but basically you just have to be stern and tough if you want him to sleep in his own bed or area. Perhaps play some soft music for him to soothe him a bit.

| Hi Shannon and congratulations on your new baby!! What's his name, size, etc. Inquiring Yorkie mommies want to know!! We all get excited at the prospect of a new baby! Fasteddie had good advice. The way we started Toto out we learned from one of the many books we studied! If you keep him in a crate ... when he starts to cry, simply tap on the metal with another metal object [I used a little curtain rod]. Don't "whack" ... just lightly tap and they HATE that noise! It took about 6 times but Toto never barked at bedtime again!! She is one now and since we aren't "afraid" of her anymore we eventually let her start sleeping in our bed, but it was our idea and not hers! We just couldn't bear to be 2 feet away from her!! Good luck!

Yeah, they love to be close to you and our Gypsy Rose slept in the bedroom in a travelling crate and in addition to all the advice already given, I would suggest a toy dog or whatever in the crate with the pup as they are used to cuddling up to brothers and sisters!! It is difficult to be firm with them I know but I,d be too nervous to have a tiny yorkie in the bed ! They usually settle down after a few nights but some are more determined than others lol!! Do tell us about the pup!!! Ana xx

Yes, a toy would be good to have in that crate. Also, try putting in a tee shirt that you have worn or some other article of clothing that has your 'scent' on it. It will help them feel more at home if they can smell you around them.

| Yep! All of those are great ideas! We also put a wee-wee pad and a little dish of water! Toto drinks LOTS of water ... is that usual or do we have the only little "camel"??

Or you could just "cave" I didn't rescue Max until he was 4 months old....tried the cage, tried the stuffed animal and tried being strict...........finally......I caved and he sleeps the first part of the night wrapped in his blanket at the end of the bed.....about 2:00 am....he sneaks down to the head of the bed and crawls under the sheet. He stretches out along my back and is like having a little heating pad. For some reason my husband and I have never rolled over on him and we seem to have a sixth sense about where he is in the bed So if nothing else works...you can always cave! Max's Mom

caved in I caved in. I tried, but I have other dogs and I think he sensed that they were with me. So now I sleep with two yorkies and a chow-mix and sometimes go to the recliner because there is no room on the bed for me. Can you tell they rule the house......Cindy

Heh, I think it was bound to happen sometime Cindy. It's almost unavoidable unless you have a LOT of willpower. But at least be thankful our Yorkies aren't 150lb babies...

Cindy, Cindy, Cindy What a hoot.....and I thot we were bad......Sleeping in the recliner? Aren't we pitiful....what we won't do for our dogs! My husband, the skeptic,.....covers Max up when he gets up in the morning and moves the pillow over to keep him from rolling off the bed. At least, we only have 5 lbs of dog in the bed. Max's Mom

Congratulations! I have 2 puppies (I didn't get them at the same time) and I went through the same thing with them both. However, I gave in and allowed them to sleep with me for the first few days. Then as they got used to their surroundings, I put them in a crate next to my bed. Slowly the crate was moved to another area of my house and within a few weeks (about 2), we were having quiet nights. If I may make a suggestion, your puppy is still rather young so I wouldn't be too stern with him just yet over being left alone at night. My pups were 12 weeks old when I brought them home and they still cried. But the trick (after they were used to their new surroundings) was to feed them and play with them just before bedtime trying your best to tire them out. Then, when you put them into their crate, they might cry for a few minutes but they will be too tired to cry for a long time. You may also want to turn the lights out just so that he get's used to understanding that darkness means bedtime. I dealt with my yorkies bedtime issues just as I did with my kids. I kept a routine so that each night as I started going through the routine, they understood what the end result would be. My puppies are 3 months & 8 months old now and I don't have a problem out of them anymore. They know when bedtime is just by our activities. They don't necessarily go peacfully(my 8 month old hides under the table when he sees me putting his blankie in his bed - the final step to our routine) but once they are in the bed, they quiet right down and before you know it, they're asleep. I know it can get frustrating especially when you're tired. Just try to hang in there. He'll get the hang of it.

Mine cried for 2 days Mine didnt bark in the crate the first nite but he looked so sad and would wimper a lot. I made sure his crate was right next to my bed so he can see me. I put a warm baby blanky just for him and two toys in there. He only cried for about 30 min or so the first night. By the third night he was sleeping the whole night. He was awake early in the morning but did not make a single sound until he sees my husband or I getting out of bed. Then he'll start scratching the crate gate.He has napped in bed with me but not with my husband in bed. My hubby always sleeps in the middle of the bed and takes too much space! My little guy ( COOKIE) is in bed right next to my hip sound asleep. They will get used to a routine.Just keep doing what you are doing.I got mine when he was about 13+ weeks old. So I can imagine it is probably tougher on you since your baby is only 8 weeks old.Mine finally is over his shyness and loves to run like a little rabbit around the entire house! I do keep him confined most of the day if I am here ,I keep him in the family room while he's being paper trained. So far he's about 70% trained.I take him to work with me also and I have paper trained him there 99%. Since we are in a smaller area at work he knows there is only one corner to do his business! And he runs to the newspaper to do it too lol. I know you will enjoy your new baby. They are so much joy . Gen
